I dug around but didn't really come up with some solid answers. I have been gathering some parts slowly over the past year. Mostly engine and transmission parts, and a few tools that look like they might be helpful. I'm not looking for upgrades, ie, I know the fuel neck gasket from Ford has better track record but there is one in the kit. I'm looking for items that must be purchased to 'complete' the kit. Currently I'm in process of buying some fuel related parts and fittings. Do I need the sending unit?

For context, I have not even ordered my kit. I'm not quite ready and I'm holding until the final details of the MK5 are released before I make a decision.

Thanks everyone!!!

Fuel tank sending unit comes with the complete kit. It's listed in the "Complete Fuel System/Parts" section on the Complete Kit page of their website.

I am not sure anyone here (except perhaps someone from FFR) can answer this question, as the details of what will be included in the complete kit for the Mk5 are not yet finalized. But for the Mk IV, you could purchase almost everything needed for a complete car with the exception of the battery and some fluids. The engine and transmission are most often sourced elsewhere, but sounds like you have that covered. I purchased several options (EFI completion kit, wiper kit, rims and tires, hydraulic clutch MC, etc.) such that everything needed was included, except for the aforementioned battery and fluids. Many folks choose to purchase these other items separately as they want better quality, different parts, lower price, etc., so it will be up to you what you purchase from FFR versus on your own. Again, it all depends on what options they make available for the Mk 5, but I would be surprised if everything needed to complete the build was not offered by them.

My observation is Factory Five provide very good value in their kits and one way they do this is by controlling costs of purchased components. I found the quality of several of these items to be not the best. For example, I didn't use the ignition or light switch as I have all pushbuttons but looking at them they seemed to be very low quality. Factory Five supply master cylinders from Wilwood. Although the majority of users have not had an issue with them there are far too many failures for my comfort. There's a fairly recent thread on Wilwood MC failures and people switching to Tilton units.

My advice is to read and study this forum and feel free to ask questions. If you go to page 10 on my build thread I detail my build. Granted it's a bit over the top but maybe a good reference for you.

Good luck and welcome to the fun!

If you have not done it buy the MK4 manual whether digital or print. There is a basic list of tools there. You can also familarize yourself with the things that might need to be modified. I would do that before spending any other money at this point. I get you are awaiting the MK5 but a lot of the basics will most likely be the same.
