I assume the production years make the version. so what years would have been for each version? How can you tell a MK1 from a MK2 from a MK3 from a MK4?

It doesn't relate to the year; there were significant changes with each version. Although there were additional revisions with each the brief list of the highpoints is Mk2 got the chassis backbone and tubular footbox protection, Mk3 got a revised steering rack location and body and chassis changes at the rear to accommodate wider tires, Mk4 got major body revisions and corresponding chassis changes to lower the tail making the body closer to the original.
There are posts with more in depth detail s if you care to search.

My car is a fairly early Mk IV and was delivered in May 2012. The FFR serial number should be stamped in the in the 2x2 cross member on the left hand side above the driver’s left knee if it is a Mk IV. The number should match the OC that you want to get if you are purchasing the car.

Thank you, Not purchasing the car but trying to help him with some updates to the suspension, possibly electric steering. He built the car himself in his garage but he's a little fuzzy on the details and specifics.. lol
