View Full Version : Fan override with a Coyote?

I installed a fan override switch on my last build. This was a traditional SBF using the FFR temp sensor. I didn't want to get stuck somewhere because the probably cheap fan sensor failed and my engine was overheating. So I installed a simple fan override switch just in case. I never used it but you never know.
This time I am running a Gen 2 coyote and a Ford control pack. I will wire the control pack into the fan circuit and let the computer do the work. My question is should I bother with an override switch this time? My dash is filling up and I think original Ford equipment is tried and true. On the other hand it's not that hard to do and would be nice to have if I needed it.
Has anyone running a Coyote ever installed one? If so should I do it or move along?
Thanks guys

I don't know how much this helps but Coyotes and LS3's are pretty similar when compared in rough details. My expertise is in the latter. Both have ECM fan controls which are pretty OEM bulletproof and designed to keep the engine at operating temperature regardless of anything else going on. I'm not sure I would be too concerned about an override. If you needed it you would probably be having other unpleasantness as well. Just my two cents.

Never had a problem with my gen 1. On at 82°C, off at 78°C.

Never a problem with two Coyote builds and no switch. I had an override switch on my first couple SBF builds and never used them. I wouldn't mess with a switch. On the other hand, I've put a "fan on" indicator on all my builds. I find it reassuring to see the light on when the temp on the gauge shows it's needed. But that's a bit of a mixed bag too. On my Coupe, I guess because of the radiator/fan arrangement, even when switched off, if moving the fan will windmill and backfeed the light. I added a diode and later a HD relay to prevent.

I have not heard of anyone having issues with the Coyotes and the Ford fan control with the exception that when the Ford PCM calls for the fan, it only runs at full speed. If you are using the FFR fan, full speed is very loud and I personally find the noise annoying. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to program the Ford PCM to modulate the fan speed. Some people choose to upgrade the fan and report an improvement in fan noise. Others, myself included, installed a fan modulation controller that adjusts fan speed based on coolant temperature. Installation consists of plumbing in a coolant sensor and wiring in a control unit between the Ford PCM fan control wire and the actual fan. The modulator allows the fan to run at slower speeds based on entering coolant temperature, but does introduce another point of possible failure.
I have experience with two of the fan control modulators. The first was a Maradyne unit (MFA136). Unfortunately for me, after a couple of uses, it went up in smoke (literally). I replaced it with an AutoCool unit that I feel is superior in both quality and functionality. Here is a link to a thread about my experience - https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?42921-Alternative-to-Maradyne-Fan-Controler-AutoCool
The AutoCool does come with the option to add an override switch which is what I did. I have never had to use it. The AutoCool has run flawlessly (and quietly).

This all great feedback. I will skip the switch and give myself one less thing to wire.
Thank you
