Hi All -

I know this is somewhat off center from the Cobra, but I know people are using lifts to work on their vehicles.

Is anyone using a Quick Jack or similar device? I would really like a lift and cannot fit a 4 post. New construction garages just are not that big anymore.

Please let me know if oyu are, how you like it and what you have.

TIA,

Mark

Here you go. https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?50085-Great-day-in-the-garage-(Quickjacks-and-paint)

I have a set arriving today, like Mark I bought the open box ones and saved some money. https://quickjack.com/5000tl-refurbished/

I have built several cars ranging from Model A Fords to most recently an A Body Mopar. I love my QuickJack system and look forward to using it for my next project, a FFR roadster.

I have the 7000TLX and plan on using for my build. So far I've just used them to change the wheels on my wife's car. They take a bit of setting up but once you get the hang of them they work very well.

Most of the pro builders use them! I have a 5000 rated one and love it! Used on my FFR and daily drivers. It's low enough for me to just drive over with my roadster.

I used mine to change my oil pan and a friend used them to change oil in his Mk3. Another used them to drop his TKX and change the clutch. I can't remember what I paid for them but I did buy them from Costco for I think a good price.

I've used them on both my builds. Very useful to get the car in the air but I usually place jack stands then remove the quick-jacks if I need to get under the car as they are bulky.

I have the 5000 also and I love it.

I just ordered a pair, could not find them at Costco online, but used the link for the open box and got some pinch seam blocks as well. Now I have to figure out where I can store them....Free Shipping to boot:)

I ordered the open box 5000 per my link and received them yesterday by UPS with free shipping. From what I can tell there didn't seem to be anything open box about the ones I received, it looked like the original packaging and nothing looked to have ever been opened or disturbed. I plan on setting them up today and testing them out.

A note on set up for the quick jacks, I don't know if I read it or saw it on YouTube:

The provided liquid thread sealer needs to set up for 24 hours before use.

I did that and it worked great, no leaks.

Same - we have a one car garage with a door that when open leaves me little room for tall jack posts. Quick Jack has worked quite well!

I have a QJ5000 bought on sale at Costco and one thing to know is that because the frame rails are pretty narrow on the roadster if you have to do any work down the center of the car like install a driveshaft safety loop it is a very tight squeeze between the quick jack. I'm not a big guy and barely squeezed my shoulders flat on my back to do the installation.

True although I found by moving the Quickjacks out as far as possible from the car centerline there's enough room to work. The Quickjacks are about 8-10" wide and you don't have to have the frame tube in the center of them.

Question - I am about to pull the trigger on a set of these for my MK4 and truck build. I poured over all the threads I can find about these and the FFR Roadster in particular and I see the biggest complaint (challenge) is setting them up on the 4" tube creating tight work space if you need to get under them. I see a number of solutions ranging from building a bridge system, setting the car back on jacks to using them sideways. This all seems fine but I guess I am wondering why you can't put them under the seat pans. There is plenty of steel there to hold it up. Seems like it would be as good a place as any to lift it. I can't imagine it isn't strong enough

I found a thread and it looks like to me this is exactly what this fella did. I was going to send him a DM and ask some questions but he hasn't been on the forum in a year.

Anyone have any experience using it that way?

I use my 5000 Quick jacks all the time and it is on it now in my semi heated space. I lift on the 4" tubes BUT did just measure and your idea would work with some requirements. I love having the Mk4 18" to 24" off the ground when working on it so definitely a good add. The lift tray is about 60" long and distance between tires is about 65" so would fit and lift on the round tubing at foot box and rear outriggers which are study. You would have to roll the MK4 over the jacks placed as if to raise at the 4" tubes and then pull them out to the outer edge of body. A bit of a pain as they are not light. I could not actually try as I have under car exhaust. Any time I want to do anything major under the car I use my 2 post lift but that is in the un-heater area. Only issue I have had with jacks is a slow leak is BAD if you do not have jacks locked at one of the 2 stops for any length of time. Then one jack lowers and the other stays high, tilting the car and bad things can happen.

So you wouldn't be able to push it under the car from the outside because the tires are in the way? Perhaps the 3500 might be a better option.

Yes the 2" frame tubes are more than strong enough to lift from, they are welded to the 4" frame and to the 2x4" frame member at the outer edge door hinge.

I've seen 4x4's used to bridge the jacks so the jacks can be moved out so you can get easy access to the center of the chassis.

How does that work when the frame is 4" off the ground?

The guy that did it also built some ramps. He drives up on it like a floor lift, puts the 4x4 under then lifts the whole thing.

I took some measurements, it looks like the either the 5000TL (now 6000TL with the same dimensions) that most have will either JUST fit or JUST not fit between the wheels. I think I am going to bite the bullet and purchase the 3500XLS. It doesn't lift as high (21 vs 24 inches max) but it's considerably lighter and will have no problem picking up any factory five. Also a bonus each unit is 60lbs, vs almost 80lbs

My wife and I are little car people. All our daily's are under 3500lbs, would only be limiting if I was using them for a friends car.

I have the 7000 series that are DC operated. My thought at the time is I could take them to track days and lift them with a battery that I took along with me. Never did that, but, as Rich mentioned, I lift mine using the 2" tubes and or footbox tubes. Once in the air, I usually put jackstands under them. What is helpful is the total lift is about 21" so, I built some "pads" for my Jackstands to sit on so I can lower the car on to the jackstands, slide the Quickjacks out for work I need to do under the car and there is plenty of room. If I'm just changing tires, working on brakes, changing oil or checking fluids, I leave the QJ's under the car as they do have built in safety locks on them. I do really like them, but, they are heavy and somewhat cumbersome.
