Calling Virginia roadster owners experiences with titling your builds. I am a happy owner of a new 289 roadster build kit. I just received the certificate of origin and I expected to go get a title with that. Well no. Not until it is done and has a state inspection sticker. Then the State Police need to come out and make sure its parts are not from a chop shop. I need to get a chain of ownership on the drivetrain pieces. I will figure that out…

To my question to Virginians, I then looked at inspection requirements. 1. If it has windshield it requires windshield wipers( I opted out since if it rains the car will not be on road) and 2. If it is not muffled, it is illegal on the “highway”, whatever highway means.

Experience and advice would be very welcome.

I spent 5yrs in va w/ my FFR but sold it in 2020 so my experience may be a bit out of date. 1- You will need wipers. You 'may' be able to get away w/ clamp on the w/s frame manually operated wipers but I kind of doubt it. Wipers are not that bad a deal to install. Also, you may feel you won't need them but, then you get to a nice Sat afternoon and think about a drive, or maybe lunch. But the forecast is 30% chance of rain. W/ wipers you may say, hey that is 70% chance no problem so take the FFR. W/o them you take your daily driver. 2- The standard FFR side pipes have mufflers. Maybe not very effective ones, but mufflers none the less. One thing to check w/ the CACC guys is to find a friendly inspector who is experienced in dealing w/ FFRs. In general the car is a 65 replica so should meet 1965 safety inspection requirements. Ok, but who knows those regs now, 59years later? BTW I had mine inspected by the police when I moved into Va from Md. Mine was a little different as parts ownership was not a concern. But my experience and that of a friend w/ a 33 Hotrod (I was there) was that the officer was very, very easy and interesting to deal with. In both cases he did his job but was real interested in the cars themselves.

Thanks Craig, that feedback is exactly what I was hoping for. I also was unaware of the Capital area Cobra club and that looks loaded with great info.

My buddy ScottieC successfully registered his car with a clamp on wiper, but that was in 2017.
