As retirement gets closer and closer, my wife has become set on Hawaii. The Big Island to be specific. Her and I have spent a lot of time there and in a past life (previous wife) is from Hawaii so I've spent a lot of time there as a long term vacationer. Now we're looking at houses and potential places to actually live. One thing I'm seeing is that many of the houses have open air garages. ie. no doors. Just a car port and such. So, I'm mulling over what I should do to rust protect and better weather protect the Cobra. The Cobra would be the only car would we transport to the island. Our other cars we'd just sell and buy some cheap used car for use on the island.
Another question I have... are/is there any autox group on the Big Island? I could only find 1 event with only 1 person registered.
Also, curious how many Cobra's are on the Big Island? :-)

The Big Island is great in our experience, more removed from the tourist environments. My observation is more car culture on Oahu and Maui.
Building in Hawaii is expensive, but a garage less-so. I definitely would make that investment. It would be a resale differentiation.
I do not like mentioning this but crime exists even in Hawaii.

Look into a car capsule. I use mine indoors but they have many options now since I bought mine.

I lived on the Big Island for two years while working for Blue Hawaian Helicopters. My job required me to go over to Hilo once or twice a week. Avoid Hilo if you want your car to last. It rains...A Lot, at 2pm EVERY day! We lived in Wiakaloa Village. Very dry enviroment. If your going to be in Kona town try to stay lower (below 500' agl) as they have VOG regularly, but you probably already know that. Most of the newer houses outside of Kona have a garage. Ours did. The only bummer about the Kona side is the dip s#*t tourists who drive 35 mph and no passing lanes!! You'll get to test out the Cobra's passing power!
Best of Luck!!

Thanks for the very good reminder about Hilo. I used to own a condo in Kona and never liked Hilo much but couldn't remember why I never really went there. All I remember was telling my wife to only look at houses above the "tidal wave" line and also to stay away from bargain deals south of Mauna Loa :-)
Kona is great touristy area but living there would be a PIA. I've always like the inner island high sierra (dry) areas and the North East coast (Kohala Forest) area. Of course the real issue is finding homes within our budget.

I wonder how hard it would be to put walls and a door on a typical carport. Maybe a dehumidifier too?

I have a good friend (Biker) in West Virginia and that is precisely what he did. It was a larger one and was insulated and had electricity. He did all the work himself and it was quite a nice shop.
