View Full Version : Muffler or Resonator

Took our first go cart ride. We have 3" side pipes with the J pipe that attaches to the BBK headers and they are extremely loud. Has anyone attached a muffler or resonator in line with the 3" side pipe. Does a resonator do a good job of reducing the noise like a muffler?
Any help or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Car Chemistry makes an insert that fits into the end of the side pipes (cc inserts). You press it into the side pipe with the help of a rubber hammer and it is held in place with a single rivit. The cc inserts come a cap that be added or you can buy steel wool to pack the cc insert with. I run mine with just the cc insert and no cap or steel wool. It quiets the side pipes down quite well until you get on it

Hello Brewha. Did you use the two or three disc insert? Are they hard to get back out once they are hammered in?

I used the 2 disk insert.

Unfortunately, that would be all but impossible to get out with out cutting them out.

3M Ear Plugs!
We buy them by the 200 pair pillow pack box from Amazon.
Since you are running J-Pipes you may be able to squeeze one of these mufflers in between the header and side pipes but this is just a guess. Of course taking this action would require measuring, cutting, fitting and re-welding your J-Pipes but it just might work.

I welded in new mufflers from Chambered Exhaust along with cats in the headers. Once my engine is up and running I will let you know, I had FFR pipes on my last build.

Most effective mufflers have an outlet smaller than the body crossection and smaller than the inlet. The reason is the noise approaching the outlet is reflected back into the muffler body.
Obviously smaller holes are more exhaust flow restrictive than large ones. As an experiment you could make pipe-end block-off plates with a small outlet hole, 0.75 to 1.0 as a start. Test for noise and performance. Making the outlet hole larger will increase noise and power. You may find an acceptible compromise.
Hole shape could be another experiment. You may have seen "fish tail" exhaust outlets on vintage cars and motorcycles. That was a method of noise suppresion.

So I am looking into some method of Noise Reduction and am glad that I found this post, but do have some questions.
1) Do you have FFR Exhaust and adding these, how much did it reduce the sound of the exhaust? Do you have a video with a soundtrack?
2) You can tune these with packing steel wool or fiberglass packing. So, since these are difficult to get out, how are you able to "dial them in" if you can't get them out?
3) You just insert these in through the turndown on the side pipes, correct?
Thanks!

Complete coincidence but I just installed some 3 plate versions of these into my side pipes - not FFR pipes but a mix of stuff with 30” glass pack. After a long 3 day race weekend and 200mile drive I couldn’t hear out of left ear for 24 hours ;)
And I was blowing sound with 109.9db (dbc I think)
I cut my down turned end off so I could play with options. I ended up with the optional smaller input and no output plate. Then welded it into my glass pack and the welded the end pipe back on.

You can wrap with wire wool or fiberglass too. I didn’t.
I’m racing again on Saturday but it’s taken the harsh edge off at least. I wouldn’t say “quieter” since noise is a funny thing but I would say smoother and more pleasant somehow.
Will be interesting to see sound guys results on Saturday.

Way back when I used the 3 disc unit. Can't remember if I used any of the small cap discs or not. Try searching 'quieter exhaust' on the other forum and you will come up w/ a bunch of info and may find my old thread.

I do have the FFR exhaust and the cc inserts toned it down enough that it was tolerable. I did buy steel wool to put into the spacing but did not. The external outside holes are wide enough to force in the steel wool if you need to. You install inserts with a rubber mallet and a piece of 2x4 into the ends. Once they are in a rivot installed just in front of the cc insert will stop it from being pushed out.
One thing I have noticed is that the new exhaust tends to quiet down after a while. When they are new they are very brassy.
