Hi all,

A few of us over at the SL-C forums were looking at registering in the NY/NJ area and there are a couple posts here about it. It'd be great if anyone could share their experiences and knowledge. Replicas put together with an older block can help skip past some of the registration and inspection requirements unlike new cars. Cars like the GTM or SL-C that may have a current year crate motor, and current year/newer engine registration is what we're interested in learning about.

We've had plenty of suggestions to register in MT, but that's a last resort.

Digging through the registration packet for NY there are items like secondary air, DOT side windows (not possible on the SL-C), and a whole host of requirements - or are they required? Headers? Crates don't come with exhaust... Padded dash and visors? SL-C comes with neither. Anyway, whatever knowledge someone could share regarding registering a hand-built/kit car in the more restrictive states like NY/NJ would be great. TIA!

I registered in upstate NY, Ulster County several years ago. Mine was a roadster so no side windows. They said you needed windshield wipers and defroster which I had. I never saw them check if the defrosters work as they never started the car. Most people will rap a towel around the visors as I did and regarding a padded dash I believe I had an 1/8 inch of padding in my dash. I cant answer the question regarding exhaust as I have them and assume you would need them as well. In my opinion it seemed they were more concerned that parts weren't stolen rather than if your dash had padding etc... They do definitely check blinkers, lights, horn etc...

Thanks Craig. Yeah, I have heard of the "towel" trick before. I have no sun visors at all, so I don't know if even having one is a hard requirement.

First off, do you live in NY or NJ?
Both require proof of residency when attempting to title and register a vehicle, any vehicle.
Second, I would not go the Montana route, both states are hip to the trick, and you will get extra scrutiny while driving in both states.

Now, if you live in NJ, you should contact the special titles division in Trenton (State street office) and request a kit car packet. Read it, follow it to the letter, and you'll have no issues getting your car through it's initial inspection, then title and registration.

Here's a nice write up about the NYS process. Call the numbers recommended in the post and you will get the proper information to move forward.
