Help Please: Remove the dash on am MK1

Hi All -

I picked up an MK1 that is a 24 year old build and I am making some updates. One is revise the dash. However, I cannot figure out how it comes out of the car? There are no fasteners visible and am wondering how it is attached.

Any help in sorting this out would be greatly appreciated!

The original build manual called for screws along the top edge of the dash and one on each end. If these aren't visible it may be attached with Velcro or the builder may have engineered some hidden mounting brackets that would be visible from the foot wells.

Thanks! This helps. I bet they are buried under the dash cover to be hidden. It is down tight.. Here is what I have.

I don’t see any signs of screws through the face of the dash, even under the lip of the body. There are usually dimples in the vinyl material where the screws would be. Time to crawl around to look. The builder must have used an alternative attachment method including L brackets from the hoop or something similar

Yea, what I am seeing looks like the original builder had no intentions of removing the dash. I may end up drilling and cutting, the reconfigure attachment.....

Door hinge covers makes me believe this to be so, as the FFR MK I did not have any covering on the door hinge assembly. If the builder built those covers, it does point to a custom configured dash assembly.

Yea, and it is permanently attached, so I will need to create a new attachment scheme. Thanks for all the comments

I agree with egchewy79. My sense is that the dash is attached either with an adhesive or "L" brackets. If they used L brackets, you should be able to see or feel the brackets along the underside of the hoop. Depending on the padding underneath the dash covering, you should be able to feel some form of dimple. The dash is barely thick enough to use any kind of recessed fastener. I'm willing to bet he glued them on, or glued the dash to the hoop. I don't see any heater controls on your dash, so I'm guessing there isn't anything in the way other than wiring, which you should be able to get a hand around. I'd suggest disconnecting the battery and poking around with your hand.
