View Full Version : fuel filler body cut out
So my kit came with the fuel filler traced in yellow, but not cut out. Did you guys cut along the traced yellow lines, or did you cut some other place? As I do the body work I'm getting closer to deciding where to make the hole and also sanding and such is washing out the FFR yellow traced lines. Any suggestions? Thanks. Fred

I use the included gasket to center the hole where I want it before drilling.

Both 289s that I have done, the customer wanted the gas cap "on" the body rather than mounted to the FFR supplied bracket. This eliminates the open area around the gas cap. Looks just fine and makes installation a lot easier. Consider this when you drill the hole. I had to fill one of them in and recut.

Thanks Mike. I just went out to the garage and fished around in box 29 and found the bracket you mentioned. I think I will use that. Any down sides to using the bracket over "on" the body mounting of the gas cap? I suspect if I cut along the FFR traced lines on the body then I can adjust the bracket and the hoses to line up underneath. Flawed logic here? Thanks. Fred

I attached mine to the body. I don't understand why anyone would choose differently. Attempting body work.

That does look pretty good. Not to "flexible" being supported by the fiberglass? Maybe I should think again. I am getting my engine early so will focus on that in the near-term and come back to body work afterward and will have time to rethink.

My body has enough space to put gasket around the entire read bulkhead, not sure why. There is some "flex" but its small. The hose adds support. I used a flexible fuel hose like this.

thanks, I'll look into it. would be less "stuff" between filler cap and gas tank. did you cut on the yellow traced line or fit the cap and cut to that?

I'm not sure if there was a yellow circle inside the outside yellow circle. It's been a while since I cut it, the yellow circle remains outside the boundaries of the filler. A view from underneath, bodywork incomplete, and fuel hose on to keep dust out so no clamp.

So I connected up the fuel filler tubes, soft and hard lines..........was a bit of a puzzle........but now have what I think will be the fuel filler set up. Body is still off so I haven't lined up and cut anything. I may be doing an about face and mounting the cap on the body. Time will tell when I fit the body back on. Thanks for the pictures and suggestions.

FFR didn't cut out my fuel filler hole :(, so I have to guess where it goes. I have the fuel tube mounted and I've done some measurements based upon fixed location on the car (the passenger seat headrest) but I can adjust a bit. Does anyone have any location dimensions that I can compare to the estimated location I currently have?

Longitudinally it's 12.75" from the trunk cutout to the center of the filler circle. Transversely, it's 26.4" from the edge of the right wheel well cutout. You can see how I positioned the tape measure so you can duplicate the measurements. No guarantee these measurements are accurate, some things FFR has done have not been very accurate, but close enough :-)

I think I'll put the body on and then align the filler below the body, mark it and cut after. Originally was thinking I'd use the supplied metal mounts, but then comments here have me rethinking that strategy and I plan to mount the filler cap to the body. Seems there is some latitude to move it some and cutting along the yellow lines may not be the best approach. Also the yellow circle is quite large.
