I ordered a Tremex TKS 5 speed TCET 17765. I have a 302 ford engine. After installing the transmission I realized that my shifter was slightly under one of the upper cross bars in the transmission well. After closer inspection I also noticed that the transmission tailstock is sitting firmly on the 4 in. steel pipe cross member. I cannot adjust the transmission position because the shifter is pinched under the cross bar in the transmission well. I was thinking of cutting the center crossbar above the shifter and rewelding it further back. The only other way I could fix it is purchasing another transmission. Hate both of these options. Your feedback might help me deal with this problem. Two steps forward and two steps back. Thank you for any feed back.

Did you order the trans with a mid shift kit? How about some pics so others may be able to assist.

Remove the 6 bolts from the shifter housing, lift it off and rotate it 180 degrees and reinstall.

There isnt a mid shift kit for this transmission. I asked silversports if I could relocate the shifter and they said no. Thanks for your feedback.

If this is a TKX transmission, there are indeed mid-shift kits. I have one. But I'd do what Jeff suggested.

This is probably the single most common combination. It will work. Just have to figure out what works best for you. Not my personal choice, but many have cut out one of the diagonal crossmembers in the tunnel. If you do, personally I'd suggest welding it back as needed to clear. But some don't even do that. But first figure out where you want the shifter. Flipping it around 180 degrees as suggested is easy. Some opt for the midshift. Requires some teardown of the transmission so a more major change. https://www.shiftsst.com/product_images/shiftsst/installation_instruction-instruction_file-270-v1.pdf

I installed the Silver Sport TKX mid-shift kit. Not particularly hard to do, but does require cutting a small amount off the ends of the two outer shift rails. It would be easier to do before installing the transmission, but I did mine after everything was installed. The shifter works well (paired with a Coyote) with regards to function and location. The Silver Sport kit also preserves the block out feature of 5th gear/reverse. Another mid-shift option for the TKX is from Mike Forte. His kit does not require cutting any rails and seems simpler to install, but I am not sure if the 5th gear/reverse block out is maintained. Probably can't go wrong with either kit. However, I would suggest trying the 180 degree flip Jeff mentions as a starting point since it is very easy to do and costs nothing.

There are a couple available. I have one from Mike Forte. Tremec and Race Tuning offers their version. Silver Sports has their version, model #TRA-32236. They don't call it a mid-shift, they call it a 'Front Shift Conversion Kit'.

Cleve, I did both the 180 degree shifter rotation and moved the tunnel cross bar in post #33 in my build thread. Maybe the pictures will help.

I have a new TKX behind a 351W stroker. It came with the ability to swap shifter 180', to move it forward, which I did. That required moving one of the cross supports. I just cut it out and repositioned to allow for the new shifter location, then welded it back in.

Ha! A flight stick for the shifter. Very cool. Which begs the question, have you configured any of the buttons to perform certain functions?

Sadly no! The helicopter cyclic stick handle came from a CH-54 Skycrane in Juneau Alaska. When he removed it he cut all the wires very short (as in non-existant) But it was a gift so I did not complain.

Erik Treves (Blackhawk Helicopter test pilot) put a functional stick in his Hawk Coupe. It's pretty wild!

Thanks, 45 years as a helicopter mechanic. Kinda in my blood.
