Newly here, lurking and reading coupe build threads for a while. I am planning to build a coupe with my son. I am currently setting up a shop for the build, hope to place an order early next year.

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed previously. Unfortunately the search function for the forum appears to leave a lot to be desired.

Has anyone used one of the aftermarket “hot rod” tilt steering columns in a coupe?

Any reasons why it’s a terrible idea?

I have found some “custom length” columns. Don’t know if they would fit. It looks like they have canceling turn signals built in.

I would also plan on a quick release steering wheel for ease of egress.

Since my second car, a ‘69 Grand Prix with tilt, I have liked being able to “customize” the view of the dash through the steering wheel.

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Welcome. I have never seen anyone install one of those in a coupe. I can only speak to the Gen 2 frame and dash layout but I would be very surprised if you could fit one of those columns into the dash without major modifications. As least on the Gen 2 the steering shaft barely sticks out of the dash, so most of the tilt column would need to be behind the dash. And the column would be competing for very limited space with the pedals and master cylinder assembly, the fuse box, other wiring.

I am pretty sure the Gen 3 allows for the steering wheel height to be adjusted up and down before being fixed in place.

I have a oldsmobile intrigue column in my coupe. Still a work in progress but it allows till, quick disconnect, factory style turn signals and wipers as well. You can check my build thread in the coming week as I'll be updating it significantly.

Thank you for the welcome.

Good point, the website claims “5-1/2" from the bottom of the dish to the top of the column's shroud”, I don’t know what the coupe with the Russ Thompson turn signal measures at.

If anyone could measure from the dash penetration to the base of their steering wheel, (with or without the turn signals), it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

I have purchased a 12" Ididit tilt column. I am going to try and use it in my Gen 3. I am also doing a custom dash to try and allow for clearance. It may not work, but I am going to give it a go. I still have several months to go before I can get to that area.

I am really trying to get away from having to deal with a removeable steering wheel and really like the idea of having the turn signal stalk and other controls on the column.

Skuzzy, I will be following your progress. Good luck.
