Intro
Hello Factory Five Forum,

I’m looking to build a Factory Five Roadster with my father in-law. I’m in the early planning stages, and my wife and I hope to surprise him for his birthday next October. The Forum has been awesome to see what other’s have done. Special thanks to Straversi (my favorite build), Papa, Edward, and Jazzman for your Roadster build threads. My build goals are to make this a safe, fun, multi-generational sports car. We’re on a budget, but I want to prioritize comfort and drivability along with safety over HP and additional weight. My hope is my father in-law puts thousands of miles a year and drives it every weekend when the weather is nice. I live in California, but the build will be done in Indianapolis, Indiana at my father in-law’s house. As this is supposed to be a birthday surprise I’m hoping to get the communities help to ensure we’re getting off on a good start. I don’t want to figure each and everything out, as I hope my father in-law and I can do this together, but I also want to avoid trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole later because I chose the wrong thing from the start. The biggest thing I need help with is selecting a motor, and making sure I’m thinking about it correctly with wanting a Small Block 302. I’m an engineer and my father in-law is a very talented tile/glass installer. Between my technical skills and planning/financial competencies, and his craftsmanship and attention to detail, I’m hoping we put together a piece of art. Also I just had a son in March so this is going to be a three generation build. I’m looking forward to the project, and hope this community can assist throughout our build.

Kit from FF
After some research and understanding what my father in-law likes and what my goals are, I’m planning the following kit from FF:
-Mk4 Base Kit $14,990
-15125 Left Hand Chassis
-13083 - 302/351W Mounts $250
-17181 - Straight Pipe Deletion Credit -$100
-17189 - Side Exhaust Deletion Credit -$200 (my father in-law previously commented when we went to Canepa in Scotts Valley, CA and saw several roadsters that he preferred the straight pipes)
-17154 - 2015 Mustang based IRS Kit $3,199
-35192 - Front and Rear IRS Touring Shock Set $600
-16668 - 2018 Mustang IRS 3.55 Center Section, Spindles, and Hubs $1,750
-16799 - Power Steering Kit $299 (I want power steering but not sure we need this kit, please help)
-17180 - Gauge Deletion Credit -$400
-17179 - Seat Deletion Credit -$250
-13029 - Uncoated chassis
-16622 - Satin Black Roll-Bar (wish I could delete this as I’ve read many prefer another aftermarket one)
-Donor Brakes
-17137 - Wood Steering Wheel - wish I could delete this as I hope to get a different wheel
-16900 - body w/ cut-outs traced
-17141 - Blank Mk4 Roadster Dash

Motor
This is where I definitely need help. In general, my build goals are to keep it under 300HP. I have a 150HP Ducati Streetfighter and I miss my 75HP Ducati Monster. I like the idea of a Coyote and reliability, but not 460HP+ and extra weight/size. In the future, if we want more power I hope to build out the 302 and maybe add a supercharger. I would also like the dependability of EFI. I do like EFI on my current motorcycle over the more difficult to start in cold weather carbureted one from before.

302’s I’ve looked at (most to least expensive)

Factory Five Engines by Blue Print $12,995 for EFI with transmission $18,870. I assume this is top of the line and ready to drop in without issue to the project, but it comes at a high cost. It’s also a lot more power than I want to start with and a lot more than I want to spend on the engine. I don’t think this is what I want to do, but willing to be convinced.
Also on this note, I see several other similar spec’d Ford Small Blocks that are much cheaper than FFR Blue Print specific Engines. https://blueprintengines.com/collections/ford-compatible-small-blocks-302-c-i/products/bp302ctfk. $9,669. Seems you get a little more aggressive Cam and performance cylinder heads on the FFR version, but not sure it’s >$3,000 worth for 9 horsepower. Would love to know what others think.
I watched this video on YouTube by Power Nation https://youtu.be/dKr5WMVLu4w?si=j0Pf_OpiPVWxqF6L. https://www.powernationtv.com/episode/HP2010-01/horsepowers-blue-oval-302#parts. I know this has been opened to larger displacement, but I think “new” summit racing parts build gives me a rough idea that the parts will cost more than $9,000. They called this a budget friendly build, but I don’t see it unless I got the wrong list of parts (which is very possible because a lot of things lacked descriptions and no part numbers were provided). If anyone can point me to a parts list to rebuild a fox body 1990ish-2000ish engine that would be welcomed as well. New pistons, rockers, rollers, cam, etc. based on the cost of the parts I spec’s for the video I don’t really see this as a budget friendly option.
$50 spark plugs
$500 Rocker arms
$1200 roller cam and kit
$30 guides
$60 kit
$100 nuts
$100 studs
$500 Headers
$400 Oil pan
$150 ignition set
$600 Pro billet distributor
$1500 Rotating assembly
$630 heads
$250 intake manifold
$150 Valve covers
$1200 Holley sniper 2
2:04 into this video they say Blue Print sells a 306 version of this 302 motor for $3,200. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpjwKZEgzj8. I can’t find this. I would be very interested if this is still available. I know this video is 4 years old and from Covid times. The cheapest 302 I see on Blue Print’s main page is $5,749. Same question if anyone has thoughts on this $5,749 version would be welcomed. https://blueprintengines.com/collections/ford-compatible-small-blocks-302-c-i. I get this is the long block and with EFI is $7,399.
ford 302 engine 97-01 explorer only gt40 heads https://www.powertrainproducts.net/ford-302-engine-97-01-5-0-explorer-only-gt40-heads-p/1746.htm. $2,499. I think this is what I’m leaning towards and gives us the best chance to get a quality engine that will run great and let us still add some custom touches. Full description: FORD 302 97-01 COMP ENG 12/96-01. VIN P. EXPLORER. MFI. ROLLER CAM. BLOCK #F1SE. HEAD # F77E-AA KNOCK SENSOR IN BLOCK. FIREING ORDR 13726548. HAS "GTP" CASTED BY # 1 PLUG. In the future, I think we would up the HP with new internals and/or supercharger. This seems like a cost effective solution and will keep us well under 300HP to start.
Find fox body engine, wiring harness, transmission, etc from Donor Car. This seems like something my father in-law would love scraping together from salvage yards throughout Indianapolis/midwest. He may end up selecting to go down this path, but from the stuff I’ve seen it will need some cleaning and repainting to make it worthy for our build. I also don’t want to worry about significant down time due to blown motor or leaky head gasket, etc. Plus with IRS I believe we need more modern mustang brakes and such so again not sure this is the right path for us.
Ford Explorer H/O block at salvage yard for ~$250 and do a refurbishment ourselves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vg1MRUZqUqU. I don’t think I want to go this route as I would rather have an engine that has been resurfaced professionally and has some new parts. I hope we put a ton of miles on this engine without issues/downtime.
Any other thoughts or feedback is welcomed on engine selection. I’m also hoping to go to some events for Monterey car week and hope to see some builds there. I thought a few people posted that Mike Fortes does superchargers and various other components. https://fortesparts.com/ I don’t see a supercharger listed on the site, but I do see whole engine builds.

Seats
https://intatrim.co.uk/products/stoneleigh/
https://intatrim.co.uk/products/odyssey/
I think I’m leaning towards Stoneleigh. I’m taller and my father in-law is taller. I want to have a headrest and comfortable heated seats.
Leather Facing £928, Harness Slots £90, Heated Seats £150, Logo Embroidery £50. £1,218. I’m assuming £200 for shipping so around $1,834 for the set. I’ve also looked at Ricaro and Corbeau seats. I’m concerned about the fit and not being too tall and pushing our knees into the dash with extra seat bottom/cushion.

Fuel Tank
https://fuelsafe.com/products/ed122a-aff
22 gallon Factory Five Enduro Cell, ED122A-AFF $1,050
I want larger capacity tank, I like the look of the fuel cell and I want the safety of the fuel cell in case of collision or rear end. I’m concerned about the fit if we go with rear exhaust and what level of trunk modifications will be necessary (i.e. cutting the frame).

Headlights
https://www.hidprojectors.com/collections/ac-shelby-cobra
Want to get my father-in laws thoughts but somewhere between $600-1,400. I want LED brighter lights that will more reliable and safer.

Tools in the immediate to start body work
--100 1/8 Cleco Sheet Metal Fasteners + Cleco Pliers w/Carry Bag (K1S100-1/8) $100. I would rather have too many than too few. My father in law is going to have to do a lot of the panel riveting on his own.
