View Full Version : Is it normal to have to flex/bend the Al trunk side panels to install the body?

Hey Y'all,

I'm looking for some guidance/expertise...

I temporarily installed my Mk IV Roadster body onto my partially assembled frame today (just to check the fitment of various parts). I noticed that even though I lowered the body in front and moved the body as far rearward as the front quickjack frame would allow, that I still had to bend/flex the Al trunk side panels before the rear part of the body slid down into place. I guess another way to describe it is the rear "roll-pan" doesn't slide over the rearward edge of the trunk side-panels as I lower the body, unless I bend them a little inwards.

Is this normal? Did any of you have to trim those panels for the body installation? I can imagine with the bulb-seal in place, the clearance need would just as critical...

I appreciate your feedback!

"A little" maybe. Also while pulling on the lower rear edge of the body as well. It's tight and that's one of the reasons guys sometimes scuff up or ruin the bulb seal along the top of the trunk sides. But the amount of bending shouldn't be much. If it is, then your body may not be far enough back.

Just pull the body back till it clears. Don't have the brace in the body

No. Nose down with the front bumper mount “outriggers” nested as far forward as possible then pull the back down and over the trunk walls. It’s a tight squeeze!

Second cup of coffee brought me an analogy—-it’s kind of like putting a fitted sheet on a bed :D

Hi Jeff,

Indeed! Lots of pulling carefully without tearing anything...sometimes that darned mattress needs to be lifted up a little
