Hi everyone…trying to plan my dash. Is there an easy way to trigger a single red warning light from both low oil pressure and high coolant temp or would I need a separate red light for each?

Speedhut gauges on a 351.

Thanks!

FWIW, I didn't use any of my kit-supplied trigger lights. I just keep an eye on my gauges. My custom speedhut speedo has turn signals and high-beam indicator, so I didn't use lights for those, either...just gauges.

That said, if you want some of my extra kit-supplied indicator lights, let me know, and I'll send them to you.

I used aircraft press to test indicator lights. They have three terminals #1 for PWR, #2 for grd, #3 for grd to test. The high beam and turn signal activate when the circiut is on #1 has 12vt. #2 & #3 are grounded at all times. The oil pres light has pwr to #1 at all times and the Ford pressure sensor supplies the ground to #2 when there is no oil pressure. The temp warning light is wired the same as the oil press, except that I have an overide switch that will ground the circut turning on the fan relay and supplying #2 with the ground. If you wire the light with #1 pwr at all times (when IGN is on) and wire the oil and temp ground to #2 in parallel, the light will be on when ever either source supplies the ground.

I would not use the FFR cheap indicator lights.

. . . Is there an easy way to trigger a single red warning light from both low oil pressure and high coolant temp or would I need a separate red light for each? . . .

If your sensors are the typical Ford single wire- on/off type, the circuit would be positive thru the light then to the sensor which would close to ground when the limit is exceeded, turning the light on. You could wire both to the same light and either one would then trigger the light. The drawback is you don't know which triggered it but if you're using it to warn you to look at the gauges, it probably doesn't matter

If your sensors are the type to control a gauge (internal resistance to ground), it won't work.

You can get a thermal switch in varining degrees. Most use a 185, my kit supplied one, but Summit sells them up to 205 I believe. They make a ground at the rated temp. You most likely have one activating your fan relay. Most aftermarket intake manifolds have an extra boss in the water passages where you can put an additional thermal switch. My Weiand has three. Summit also sells pressure switchs that close at a given rating (low). Supply a keyed 12vt to a light then let it find a ground through either the oil press or temp switch. NOT the oil pressure or water temp sendors. Must be dedicated switches. Dakota Digital and Bob Drake sell an adapter that will take both an oil press gauge sender and low oil press switch, both sold at Summit.

I think it is better to have different color lights for the different warnings.

I did it this way on my AOD cooling system with an over temperature switch and a low pressure switch either will switch to ground on the same dash light circuit in the event of an issue

I found this the other day. I kind of like the integrated turn signals, along with the other warning lights. Seems like it would be a nice and clean look.

I prefer a simple dash, not wanting additional lights and switches.
Wondering if Speedhut could install warning lights in your Temp and Oil Pressure guages(?)

This is certainly doable and likely not too hard to wire-up. If you want to do two feeds to a single LED just use a Hy-Power Diode (link below). This eliminates any backward feed and allows either input to turn on the LED. I had to use the Hy-Power when using a single LED to represent both left and right turn signals. What you are asking is the exact same thing, just different feeds.

A bit more to your point, for the "low oil pressure idiot light" you can just run a separate "on/off" sensor on the engine. My car uses two oil pressure sensors, the first sensor for the gauge (from Speedhut), and an on/off sensor for the idiot light.

I suspect you can do the exact same thing for the high coolant temp feed as well (e.g., have a sensor for the gauge and a second on/off sensor for the LED) but you would have to find one. I only am aware of the oil pressure sensor.

Link to my dash layout to show how I wired mine.

Thanks everyone. I talked to Adrian at Speedhut. He gave me a very decent price to send back my speedometer, oil, and coolant gauges to have lights installed. Very impressed with those guys.

Good to know. Glad you liked my idea. Thats what I would do, I think this is simpler & cleaner solution.
Post pics when you get them installed.

Yes, you can. I have low oil pressure / high oil temp going to the same light. During autocross, there is no time to look at gauges. So, I wanted a "shut 'er down" light. It is a parallel circuit. Either sensor turns on the light. I am also a simple dash in a Cobra guy.

Can you just get the Speedhut gauges that include a built in adjustable warning light? I have it for all of my gauges except the voltmeter.
