View Full Version : Footbox fresh air vent with hydroboost?

I know I've seen a build with the fresh air footbox vents and a hydroboost install. I just can't remember who's build had this combo. I'm looking for some reference pictures of how you routed the 3" vent hose around the hydroboost setup. Let me know! Here is my setup --> wondering if I can just route the hose over the top of the hydroboost (along the 3/4" frame) and then jog down to the front of the footbox.

I vented from behind the seats, you can see details in my build thread.

I did see that in your build and it's a cool custom fab you did. I'm just trying to keep it simple for now and I already have the blast gates and hoses, so wouldn't need to custom fabricate any more parts other than cutting the holes in the elephant ears and the footbox panel. I'm 100% sure I've seen some builds with the footbox vents and hydroboost setup. I want to say one was a 25th anniversary build or at least was using those wheels.

I tried the method above, of pulling air from the front brake ducks into the foot box. Didn't work very well. At stops the heat from the engine heats the tube and I ended up getting a lot of hot air.

So I reversed it. I disconnected the tube from the front brake vent and have the exit blowing out into the wheel well. Now it sucks air out from the top of the foot box. Works much better IMO.

That is interesting. Makes sense when you think about it.

I was planning to put some heat deflectors on the footbox exterior between the headers and the vent hose to try to block some of that heat. First time I'm hearing about this being a problem though....most of the builds I've read up on say it helps a little bit but not a lot. I'll test it out and see - if it is pre-heating from the engine its easy enough to flip it around like you suggest.

I put the blowers more forward and insulated the area of the tubing that runs through the engine bay above the headers. I don’t have hydroboost but do have vacuum power brakes that caused an interference issue with the vent. Routed the vent tubing outboard along the front of the elephant ear then straight back into the foot box. Had to use a hole saw to cut the hole in the foot box front where I wanted it. Put a 90 elbow inside the foot box to direct the air downwards into the blast gate control.

I have this mod with my MKll and honestly, I probably wouldn't do it again. Just doesn't make much of a diferrence.

Here is what I did on mine many years ago.

The comment made by another poster here is worth addressing. Although the pictures of what I did almost 10 years ago look good, it says nothing about the functionality or usefulness. First, the units I used from Cobra Earl are noisy, I mean louder than the exhaust or wind noise. In use, they were simply not pleasant to listen to. Second, they really don't do that much to funnel cool air to the cockpit. IMO, after what I experienced I would not add them to another build.
I have ordered a Daytona coupe kit and AC is the only way to go IMO. Now speaking of AC and the roadster, IMO don't bother as you can only feel the cool air when the car is not moving. So unless you have a top for your roadster, don't expect that the AC will make a big difference under most driving conditions. The heater, on the other hand with the vents I turned down into the foot boxes worked reasonably well given the investment. I would add the heater kit if I were to build another roadster and I lived in SoCal when I built the car. The heater did not get used a lot, but Nice Guy Eddie's Run from Temecula to the Stone Brewery in January saw plenty of use in the early morning.

I don't have hydroboost (wish I did) but I do have the whitby booster which is just about as big (maybe bigger?)
I used a hole saw and drilled through my elephant ears and routed the hoses through them - protected the cutout/hose with some edge protector (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K8L37YK?ie=UTF8&psc=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=cobradreams-20&linkId=d7c8896952d076732bc0aef72a3c319a&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl)
