I have a question, I ordered the Ron F. roadster wiring harness, I am using an alternator from a 1989 ford mustang. I have saved the plastic connectors with some wires attached to splice into the ron F harness. Now that i am ready to do it I cant find clear instructions as to what I connect the 2 wires from the Ron F kit to out of the 3 wires that go to the farctory plugs. I looked in the chilton manual i have and it does not really show what the wires are and do.200202200203200202200203

The 1989 Mustang had a 2G alternator. This link to the other forum has a diagram for the 2G. Also a discussion about the hazards of using the 2G. You might want to reconsider. Especially with dated wiring and connectors since that was the source of some major issues. https://www.ffcars.com/threads/2g-alternator-wire-diagram-needed.546121/. Do some Googling and you'll find more info including a TSB from Ford.
Ford released the 3G a little later which is apparently a significant improvement. In either case, the Ron Francis harness only has the large charging cable which goes to the big terminal on the alternator. Breeze sells a harness for connecting a 3G. https://breezeautomotive.com/shop/harness-regulator-3g-alternator/.

I fully agree. You can get a new 3g for around a $100.

Thanks for the info, quick follow up. I respect the community here and will make my own choices based on everything I digest in responses. I am planning to twin turbo my build. I took the donor approach and removed the 1989 mustang motor trans and rear end. The motor has been completely gone through and built for boost. I got the ron Francis body harness and I am going to use a Holley terminator for engine management. Can I just get a one wire alternator or should I really get a 3rd gen mustang unit?

I just did this conversion-2g to 3g.
I got my parts as well as the 3g alternator from Amazon - alternator was $78.
Personally, my selling factors for 3g vs 1 wire was the known constant charging at low rpms and the ability to find an alternator at pretty much any parts store anywhere.
The wiring was very easy/straightforward.

Lots of opinions on this one. I can only cite my experience. I've used 1-wire alternators on all but my Coyote builds. Easy to hook up and they worked fine. I used alternators from Tuff Stuff Performance. They say they excite and charge at low RPM's. Something not every 1-wire, especially older ones, do. Probably other brands are the same. But having said that, a new 3G would be about the same price and is arguably a better technical solution.

I started to post and checked out the first link Edwardb posted above https://www.ffcars.com/threads/2g-alternator-wire-diagram-needed.546121/, and saw my post from back then. I used a 3g Alternator from a 92-94 Aerostar. It gives you a little more power (95Amp) and peace of mind. It is easy to splice into the Ron Francis harness. Eight years later and have had no issues with it.

jj, that is exactly what I use, and recommend. It can be found many places for less than $100 bucks.
