I'm replacing one of my hubs and the axle nut at the same time. I bought one from the Ford dealership CCPZ-3B477-G, and it's noticeably different than what FFR sends. I asked the parts guy if they had a gold, larger version before and he wasn't aware of that, so not sure if FFR's is a proprietary nut?
Here's the two in comparison with the new one on the right:

The new one is smaller and has some kind of thread locker as well. I'm assuming that the torque specs would be the same with the new nut at 98 ft/lbs and 45 degrees? I had read that some had issues with the nut coming off in the past. Is that the reason for the change and added factory thread locker?

I can't explain the difference other than an aftermarket parts vs. an OE part. The torque spec typically cited is from Ford, so no reason it's not OK. The "old" T-Bird style IRS did have issues with the IRS axle nuts coming loose. There haven't been any reports that I've heard of the same issue with the 2015+ IRS. Two 2-15+ IRS builds from my side with 15K miles. No issues. Torque the OE nut per the spec and you should be good to go.

Nuts from different vendors which serve the same purpose.

I bought a complete IRS dropout from a 2017 Mustang GT, the axle nuts looked pretty much the same as the FFR nuts with the castellated top.

They 'upgraded' the part but wonder why there is no historical reference to the old nut. The old nut is a beast compared to the new one. 36MM vs. 32MM.

FFR probably just has a stock of the older nuts. The one on the right is the new one but the one on the left does match the older Ford nut. Same torque spec, its fine if you arent doing track days.

I spoke to FFR on this and they said that they do not have access to the larger nut and that it only comes with the CV axles themselves. So unless you purchase a complete axle, you can't get them. That's bizarre.

The axle builder must have a stock of them or theyre buying some aftermarket nut. Either way, the smaller nut is fine.

I have not but I would in a heartbeat. My favorite general purpose nut is a nylock. But in hard to get to places I often double nut w/ 2 standard nuts. Example would be the windshield mount bolts/nuts and a couple of the 3 link bolts nuts. When access is limited it is so nice to spin a nut on by fingers and only need to wrench it maybe 2-3 turns until it is tight. Then the same w/ the second nut which usually takes even less w/ a wrench..
