Hello Forum,

I purchased a 302 and TKX transmission from Mike Forte. The shifter that came on the transmission will not shift. I am told it should have a gasket and spacer that would raise the assembly allowing it to shift. Mike Forte sent me a different shifter saying this is a better shifter, and that the other shifter is such a short throw that with a shift lever installed it would hard to shift. I am sure Mike is right and the shifter he sent to me is a better unit but it sits 1-1/2 below the transmission tunnel
I am a novice but to me this does not look right and would look pretty odd with the transmission tunnel top installed. Has anybody else run into this issue?
Mike Forte insists this is the shifter I need. I have a lot of money invested in the car and I want it to looks as good as I can possibly make it.
Thanks,
Ross

The shifter handle bolts to the stub with the 2 bolts. The console top has an oval hole that the handle passes through, and is closed off with the shifter boot. Once completed you will not see any of the components in your pictures.

Thanks Brrt, doesn’t the shifter boot fit over the shifter or does the boot attach to the console top?

The shifter boot goes over the shifter handle after you bolt the handle to the shifter with the two bolts. There is a chrome ring that screws into the aluminum top that secures the boot.

What do you mean it won't shift?

Yeah I haven’t seen that before most of the cars I’ve had had to boot over the shifter assembly. I understand now, just showing my inexperience.

Ted G, the shifter that came on the tranny would not shift. It needed a spacer. It sat down ard on the shift dogs and prevented shifting, Mike Forte sent me a replacement.

Mine came up a bunch when I added 3/4" of shims to the rear transmission mount to level the side pipes and correct the driveline angle.

The boot mounts to the aluminum console cover, just make sure the hole is centered over the shifter location and it will work fine.

It looks like you are using the mid-shift location on the TKX. The stock shifter that comes with the TKX will not work in the mid-shift position, it only works in the rear locations (it can be flipped for either of the two rear locations). Mike Forte sells a mid-shift kit which is what appears to be installed. I used Silver Sports Transmissions STX mid-shift kit with my TKX. My STX shifter does appear to sit higher than Forte's, but that really shouldn't make a difference once the transmission tunnel cover is installed. As others have mentioned, the shift boot is attached to the transmission cover, not the actual shifter. You will need to make a new hole in the transmission tunnel cover to accommodate the mid-shift location. I made my own shifter boot, but used the FFR trim ring that comes with the kit.
