Has anyone registered a Roadster in Tennessee?
Do they allow “Replica” registration or must it be “Assembled from parts”?

Are you transferring a titled car in? Mine was titled in Florida as a replica and they accepted that here with no trouble. Its registered as a 1965.

Replica registration. I registered mine last year. You need to go in find a clerk who knows how to do this. There's 2 forms to fill out, one that is a affidavit of ownership, the other I can't recall but it was similar to a title application.

You need to take those forms, your certificate of origin and your reciepts to the clerk who knows what to do. It will be titled as a 1965 Factory Five Roadster and will be a "replica" title. That's about it, they will give you the plate right there and your title a few days later.

Your post wasn't clear if it's already built or you're registering a vehicle from another state. On a vehicle that you're bringing in, not sure how that would work.

Where are you located in the Volunteer State?

Thanks all for the info. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

You are correct, I should have been more specific. I am nearing completion of the roadster AND looking at a move to TN. (To be close to family after my cancer diagnosis). Thus, from a timing standpoint, I could potentially do either state.
Given that TN allows replica titles and the new Florida rules don’t, I’m thinking TN wins.

Taxes may bite me more in TN.

Any other reason anyone know why I shouldn’t do TN if timing works?

No it was easy, you should do it here. No inspection, nada. Just paperwork and walk out with your tag, if you have trouble, reach out to me at (901) 317-0972. I'm out here in Memphideshu (Memphis).

I live in Crossville. About 30 miles east of Cookeville. Go to the City clerk and they will give you all the info and forms. That gets sent to the Department of Revenue. They will send an inspector to you to check out the car. The only thing the inspector was interested in was the FFR number stamped on the frame. Can't remember where it was now. Think it was under the steering wheel area. After he saw it, he put his own sticker from the DOR on it and gave me the title. Then I brought it to the City clerk and registered it. Pretty simple. Since we don't have safety or emissions testing, all they care about is that the vehicle actually exists with the correct numbers. You will need receipts for all your parts so they can tax you. They won't tax you on parts you already paid tax on so save your receipts. If the car was already titled you wouldn't need an inspection.

Good info as I’m in AZ and likely will relocate to TN in 2024. I hope to be registered by then.

I did not have any type of inspection. It's not required but if you county clerk says it is, it is. The only inspections in their "handbook" that the state provides is for salvage titles.

Good luck, it looks like you may have more work than I did in that part of the state. Agree on the receipts, the total is what they base the car tax on.

Not sure why my car had to be inspected. Mine was done in 2018. Maybe they changed since then. when did you title yours?

Sounds like the same here in Florida. Lots of people get confused with the term “inspected”. The more appropriate word is verification. They’re just looking to see if the number on the frame matches the MSO. Here in Florida i just have a buddy who is a notary sign off on the paper. Likewise you could do it with any mobile notary or even a police officer. No need to bring the car anywhere.

What a kind offer! I’ll certainly keep you in mind if I struggle.
I do have some friends in the Memphis area so I may get down there one day in the Cobra. If I do I’ll buy you lunch if you happen to be available.

One additional question, what kind of tag do you run? Once upon a time Florida allowed a tag from the replica year. That being if you could find a 1965 original state tag you could get it verified and use it, which is kinda cool. Other states have an “Antique” tag.

Not sure either, key is to not let them title it any other way than a 65 replica. I did mine last September before I even had the car done.

A few years ago when I lived in Nashville, I built a 1940 BMW R71 replica from a 1979 knock-off. When I went to Davidson County DMV, they never asked any questions. Done in about 1 hour, I even told them it was a replica, but the registration I got back just said 1940 BMW R71.
