Here is my take on a turkey pan for the 4.6 SOHC modular engine.

The pan is shallow, long, and wide so it's more like a cookie sheet than a turkey pan.

Regardless of which baking accessory analogy is more accurate, my goal was to hide some of the tubes and wires and make the engine look a little more old school. I think it's an improvement over what I had before:

Very nice, David. I like the look a lot and now wish I had done that to my SOHC. Is this the Pearl mod?

Should work great. Is that galvanized tin it's made out of?

So how did you fasten the turkey pan and air cleaner? Drill and tap the original intake plenum, or did you replace the entire intake set up??

Thanks for the compliments.

Pete,
Yes, Perl's mod was my inspiration!

Bill,
The stock intake manifold and throttle body are hiding under it all. The turkey pan base plate is 1/8" aluminum and the sides are made from 2" x 2" x 1/16" aluminum angle. I used different sized wire brushes on my drill to make a random swirl/brush pattern and then clear coated it. That's why it has a mottled look in the photos.
I made a bracket that attaches to the throttle cable bracket bolts on the throttle body. Also, there's a stainless rod threaded into one of the alternator bracket mounting holes. The base plate attaches to the bracket and the stainless rod.

Here's a photo of the mounting brackets:

That's really quite ingenious! :)

I gather that you have a hole in the bottom of the turkey pan under the air cleaner, and re-routed the cold air intake to draw air from that area? You also made a smaller plenum box to attach the intake tube to the turkey pan bottom, I presume?

Now the pictures may not do it justice, (as is often the case), but personally I think the pan would look really great with a mirror like polish..(just in case you needed something to do, for a couple of days)..lol..
If you didn't like the shiny one, be simple enough to go back to the brushed look..;)

Bill,

Yes, there's a hole at the rear. Here's a photo without the filter:

Under the plate, there's a plenum that attaches to the MAF sensor. Here's a photo of the plenum and MAF:

I did some polishing on other aluminum panels and it just about drove me crazy! That's when I settled on the brushed look.

David those added pictures are great in showing all that was involved in your mod. Thanks for posting them!
Must have been a bit challenging getting it all together, but the result really is fantastic.

I always wondered about how to get an oval Co*** air cleaner on a stock EFI set up, as I like the look of it far better than the the stock intake plenum. You show where there is a will, there is a way..:)

Another real challenge would be to make the turkey pan deeper, and designed so that the round air filter could be used in it, like some originals had. I just can't see how that would be possible with our stock EFI set ups though. I'm pretty sure there is just not enough room to run the intake tube to fit under a round one.
