Hey guys, my name is Darrell and obviously I'm brand new here. I'd like some advice and opinions on picking up my first FFR. How often do you guys see outrageous deals on unfinished kits? I guess my thought is that if I had to wait a year or 2 to find a great deal I'd bite the bullet and buy a brand new kit from FFR. Realistically if it is only going to save me a grand or 2, I'd rather new anyway. I'm also not opposed to buying a completed kit if the right deal came along but for me more then half the allure is building the kit the way I'd like. Plus, I have a great donor car, a 94 GT that has a 306 and running a single turbo (though I don't know if a FFR would fit the kit I run, or if I have the balls to drive it lol). I've had it since 2000, but the body is starting to show it's age and I'd take a beating if I sold it. Either way (brand new or unfinished kit) I'd like to find something by the summer.
You guys have a great forum here!

Thanks guys!

Welcome. You'll see a good deal on an unfinished kit once in a while, but if its really good, it goes fast. I wouldn't count on that as your primary means of getting one within a short time. Don't know if you are aware, but FFR is having a sale on the base kit right now - $1500+ in performance or appearance upgrades for free (knowing what I know now, I'd take the performance package), and if one of the first 15 (don't know if they're past that yet), a great deal on wheels. Although their sales vary in frequency and what's included, this one is pretty good, and your donor sounds like a good start for a base kit. Good luck.

Don't count on the turbo bolting right in. I had a 94 with a B&G (Fox body) single turbo kit. The B&G kit would not come close to fitting. The drivers side header was not close and the turbo placement was too high. The newer B&G kits with the log manifold may work??

I wouldn't count on saving more than a couple of grand on a used kit - but occasionally a good deal comes along. you just have to be ready to snap it up very quickly.

The build is definitly more than half of the fun.

Thanks for the advice guys! I wasn't aware of the special they currently have going, I definitely need to check that out!

One thing to keep in mind is that the current MkIV has a vastly improved body compared to the older MKs. For me, I'd have to save a ton to go w/ other than a MkIV.

You might find an uncompleted kit but I wouldn't buy that vs. the MK4 unless it was a MK4. This new body style is so much better than the earlier models. I have a MK1 and really like the differences in the MK4. I have seen guys that have their kit set around for years and get all rusty and then get ride of them. Start new with what you want not what someone else thought would be cool.

The new MK4 is the way to go, so Many of the mods have been included in this new version, and the body is way better, dont forget body work and paint is à huge infestent in your project.

I was one of those lucky guys that found a kit, hardly built, with full drive train from the donor. They don't come around often. It was a great deal for me, but if I was to do it again, I'd buy a complete kit. If you just use the drive train from your donor you are still using the best parts it has to offer. The rest of the stuff is hard to get off, old and sometimes nasty to look at, and are no way as good as the parts in the complete kit. Bottom line: find yourself a great engine and get the complete kit...you will have the time of your life! Welcome!

I agree that the MK4 improvements are worth some extra $$$. You already have a good donor. I am not sure about the turbo setup, but if you can do some creative pumbing, you can probably make it work. With a budget and donor, I would go base kit.

Not to mention if you buy a used kit, you risk missing parts, damaged parts and the possibility someone started the kit and did things "ODD"
