I've read recently here on the forum that the Gen3 Coyote crate engine is becoming increasingly difficult to source. Seems Ford is no longer making it. I'm probably 6-8 months away from ordering an engine, and I spec'ed my MkIV kit with all the Coyote bits, so I think I'm going to have to shift my engine plans. At this point in my build, I don't think I've done anything Coyote specific, other than building out fuel delivery for it, but I assume what I've built (255lph Walbro and Aeromotive Fuel Pressure Regulator) will translate to whatever EFI engine I go with.

My kit came with these Coyote-specific bits:

Coyote Accelerator Medal Mount
Coyote Computer Mount
Coyote Engine Mount Spacers
Coyote Headers
Coyote TKX/IRS Driveshaft
Coyote Power Steering Kit
Coyote Accelerator Pedal Install Kit
Gen3 Coyote Install Kit
Coyote Air Intake Parts
Coyote Engine Mount Spacers

So, if I went with a traditional Ford Small Block EFI, I'd need to swap out the driveshaft and the headers for sure. I'll have to ask FFR if they're willing to make that swap, as I've not even taken those pieces out of their respective boxes.

What I want for my engine/tranny package is a Ford Small Block, EFI, TKX, and 450-ish horsepower, built to someday potentially support a supercharger. That said, what would the group suggest? I was thinking about a BPE 408 EFI. Wondering if I can get a true turn-key package through one of our forum sources (Forte, etc). I loved the idea of a drop-in Coyote solution. I want something ready to go; I've built enough engines over the years that I don't want that experience this go-round. I don't want to muck with installing water pumps, fiddling with pulley brackets to get things aligned properly, trying to get an EFI management system that mates well with what engine I have, etc. Been there, done that. I just want something that works out of the box that I can stuff in the car.

Anyway, thanks for your assistance, and Happy Easter!

I think I got a true turnkey 302 package from Forte, many builders have noted the same on the forum. Check him out.

Greg, why not just use a pull out? Lots of them available with as little as a few thousand miles. Used a Gen2 on a Coupe build I was involved with. Didn’t have to do anything other than swap front accessories and plug in the control pack harness. Pretty much the same as you’d do with a crate Coyote.

It's not a bad idea, Jeff, and I thought about doing just that. I just don't want to use anything from a donor on this build. I want it to be all new. I recognize a pull-out with just a few thousand miles is as good as new, And even a 'new' engine from BPE is a seasoned block. I don't know...to be honest, after thinking this over, the idea of a Windsor-based small block with a solid EFI system and period look in the engine bay actually is starting to sound appealing. Having the extra space in the engine bay is nice, too. For sure, I have plenty of time to ponder this.

Anyone know if FFR swaps out things like headers and driveshafts if someone changes their mind on an engine?

Thanks, guys,

Greg

A man after my heart lol

You need to come up with a package price for all your coyote parts for someone throwing around the idea of doing a Coyote build.....hmmmm

Might you be in the market? :)

If you want something modern and the same size as an SBF, you could always go with an LS.

I could, but I won't. ;)

I know, not a popular suggestion. But worth a try!

Gen 3's are becoming more difficult to find. I've talked to Mike Forte a couple times and I know he's having a heck of a time with them. He has some aluminators in at the moment that you may want to explore. I'm sure long blocks will still be out there and available. I'm in the process of a pull out rebuild gen 2 for my upcoming 65 coupe and am really enjoying this process. For my roadster I went crate with full assembly. Definitely nice to just put in, plug in and go. Mine is low mileage and upgrading all the internals. In the end should get a nice result and at fraction of the cost.

Or, just wait for the Gen 4 to hit the market and use that. That’s what I’m doing.

I'm an LS fan. I've owned a C6 Coupe, C6 GS, C7 GS, and C7 Z06....huge power out of a durable, compact platform. But I won't put an LS in a Cobra!

Thought about that, too. But who knows if all the coyote-specific bits I bought from FFR will fit. Also thinking it may be a year or two before FFR will have a Gen4 solution. Not sure.

From what I can tell the Gen 4 is still similar geometry. Not 100% but guessing that your list of parts would be fine other than maybe the intake as the gen4 has a dual CAI. Taking a stab but guessing that gen 4 will be minor changes if any with some aftermarket or prior version manifolds. Who knows when or if it will become available to the crate market. Just based off what I've read/seen.

Greg,

Yes FFR changes out components (swap) at shipping costs which can be expensive for some items. I did it going from an LS engine to SBF on my build. The items you will need to change out are the engine mounts and possible the transmission mounts, the headers, the driveshaft, and the Coyote installation kit. Call FFR and speak to Dan and he can work out the process and determine what makes sense for you.

My 20th Anniversary Roadster was a Gen 2 Coyote crate motor. Was in the middle of their production run. So availability and knowledge about the installation wasn't an issue. When I decided to do the Gen 3 Coupe, there were rumors about the Gen 3 Coyote. So hung in there long enough to score a very early Gen 3 Coyote crate motor. I had it before even Factory Five had one. Dimensionally, everything was exactly the same. Motor mounts, headers, oil pan, etc. I had an issue with the aftermarket pickup (Moroso) so had to do some fabrication. But that's since been resolved. They changed vendors on the PCM, so the FFR PCM mount didn't fit. But I wouldn't have used it anyway. If I were building today, and wanted new crate motor, I wouldn't hesitate to wait for the Gen 4 Coyote. I'm confident it will fit the same as prior generations. The main wildcard is the dual throttle body. Has to be a creative way to plumb that. Worst case switch to a Gen 3 intake which by all accounts is excellent. Intake swaps on the Coyote are common and pretty straightforward. The Gen 3 crate motor version, with control pack, was released the summer after the Gen 3 was being sold in Mustangs. That would suggest the Gen 4 crate should be available this summer since the 2024 Mustangs went on sale last summer. Googling this topic, see that Ford Performance has already released a Gen 4 Aluminator version. That's an option now. But nothing about a control pack which at least for me wouldn't be an option. That plus the cost. Personally, I'd hold out for the Coyote. I'm a huge fan having had traditional SBF and now a couple Coyote's. Plus the LS1 in my truck build. I'd even be willing to go for a Gen 3 takeout if there were no other options. But I get wanting to start new.

I know the Gen IV at least has compatible electrical. The Gen III I got from Forte came with a Gen IV harness.
