View Full Version : Gen 3 Coyote - "right-sided exhaust manifold only?"

Friends,

Newbie question but I've looked all over online both in prior threads here and multiple websites elsewhere, and I'm not finding a clear answer. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

We're in the middle of an MK4 build and will probably do a gen 3 Coyote engine, though I'd be interested in opinions on gen 2 vs gen 3.

Many of the online gen 3 Coyote listings for M-6007-M50C (model number for a Coyote used with a manual transmission), state "right-sided exhaust manifold only." Others don't say anything about exhaust, so I don't know if they're also right-side only. I don't see any being sold that mention exhaust manifolds on both sides. The MK4 of course has headers on both sides. Am I missing something about a specific Coyote I need to look for that has dual-side exhaust?

Comments on gen 2 vs 3 also welcome while we're at it. I don't care about the extra HP's, but I'm seeing a lot about improved performance, fuel efficiency, etc., with the gen 3. Seems like it's an issue of "not a big difference but if you're willing to spend the extra $, go for it," but I'm interested in opinions.

Thanks!

If you're planning to buy a new crate engine, then gen 3 is your only option at the moment. Gen 2 crate engines haven't been available new for several years. Regarding the manifold, that simply refers to the fact that the crate engine comes with a factory manifold installed on one side. Irrelevant for our purposes, as you'll remove it and replace it with headers on both sides. AFAIK, all coyote crate engines come this way. Some sellers mention it, while others do not.

GEN 3s are not available either as far as I can tell.

Thanks to you both, and yes - thanks John for pointing out that gen 2 is no longer available as a crate. I meant that but didn't say it. Hopefully I'll get lucky with gen 3, though I know that have been significant delays from the factory.

I had forgotten all about that extra header! JohnK is correct - the crate engines from the factory came with a PS header. I believe this was because these engines were designed as replacements for Mustang engines, and the PS header for the coyote is different from what was stock in a Mustang. At least I think that's why. So, not much to contribute here other than to second John's comments. But while we're on the subject of headers, if you haven't made any decisions yet, I recommend full length headers rather than shorty headers and j-pipes. I have the shorty headers and would not take that route again were I to build another car.

Say what? I planned on ordering one from FFR in about 6 months! Doh.

Looks like Ford Performance is running out of the Gen 3 crate motors. Just a quick search, and some smaller places are saying they have some in stock. But Summit (for one) says not available. Mike saying that same thing means something of course. If you recall, the same thing happened when Ford was changing from the Gen 2 to the Gen 3 in Mustangs. Ford Performance banked a year or so of Gen 2 crate motors. But when they were gone that was it. The 2024 Mustang with the Gen 4 Coyote has been available since sometime last summer. So the factory would have switched over well before that. So for those looking for a Coyote right now, you may be able to score a Gen 3 by calling around. Factory Five typically had a number in their preparation area. Wonder what they're stock level is. But for future builds, the Gen 4 is the likely candidate. I do see Ford Performance has already released a Gen 4 Coyote Aluminator... New Gen 2 crates have been gone for a long time.

Edward. FFR is out. Thye haven't had any for a while now. Other than A few strays, ford is not producing them anymore. Myself and Ron Everitt lucked out recently on Summit. They showed none in stock but just below the listing was 2 Coyote drivetrains. Same engine but came as a complete drivetrain. $17,500.00 out the door. Came with a 6 speed and all related parts including the control pack.

Cannot resist a theory,,,
It seems I read that they included the header on the crate engine that will fit into the engine bay on the assembly line.
The drivers side is installed after the engine is installed.

Gen-3 intake manifold was an improvement over Gen-2, but if you aren't interested in the gen2-vs-gen3 hp numbers, this is likely of no interest.

Gen-3 also introduced DI injector in each cylinder, which makes interesting conversation when discussing non-Ford ECUs.
