View Full Version : Track concept inspired by the 818

Hi all, like everybody else on here, checking this forum has become a daily routine for me and I've read every post since the beginning of the design contest. I wanted to post on this forum as things are a little slow at the moment and I know I'll get some honest opinions. I started with this concept right after the end of the 818 contest so I was greatly inspired by all the designs and discussion on here! The concept was a track-day car using a ferrari 360 Challenge engine and trans with a bespoke chassis and body. I'm most interested in the 818 track version and was wondering what you guys think about modifying this to fit the 818 template. There would definitely have to be several changes including the front to accomodate the radiator but I think it could be done without losing too much of the original design. So what do you guys think? Does it have the HOF factor?

Pretty cool.
I don't know that the radiator absolutely needs to be in the front, though.

I like it! It reminds me of a Radical. Looks good!

That's exactly what I want to do with the 818 a dedicated track version.

Throw a roof of some kind on that and I'd drive it on the street!

Looks good to me. Driver is offset but you only show 1 seat. Are you planning for a passenger?

I think it definitely has the HOF factor because it evokes the same feeling that serious race cars give you like CanAm. The radiator could be an issue but that would be worth the effort to make it work. Very nice!!! WEK.

Appreciate the feedback guys, some pics of the two seater.

Looks like that is a 104" wheelbase verses the 95" of the 818 for starters. The 6-inch increase is fairly common with the larger power plant cars we all seem to aspire to and find ourselves comparing to. The longer wheelbase also makes for a sportier looking car, even with a topless track car like this.
The seating position in the blue 3D car has the driver's feet between the front wheels, the FFR 818 has the seating position and feet moved back (no pinched toes).
The 3D blue car is wider too, and the seats set farther apart. The frame width in the FFR has been guessed at 48" wide, seats are about 22" wide, take into consideration depth of steel tube frame and the seats are almost kissing, with elbows sometimes touching.
Speedboy, who did the 3D artwork? It is very nice.

I have gotten the concept, at least, I thought so about the different bodies but until now I really didn't realize how different the track version could be from the street version, for example. I think I have gotten lulled into assuming that FFR would do what they have done in the past and use the same body with a few changes for different uses. This could be such a radical departure from past history. So I wonder if the chassis will have to be matched to the body type for mounting points? Anyway this "racing" design would be track only with the ground clearance which is by design. Of course, there are a few who would probably drive it on the street! WEK.

Again, if it had a roof of some kind, I would!
To be honest, this is the kind of design I originally envisioned for the 818. As it stands it looks a lot like a Radical, but would work well for a track model. I think you could tweak the design to make an awesome looking street car with similar proportions. Kind of like a better looking ultima gtr.

This is exactly what I personally would like to see and how I would build my car. I don't need a roof, doors or windshield and have no problem wearing a helmet on the street. I raced motorcycles for years and can no longer do so. I can no longer ride on the street, but would love a sportbike-esque 4 wheeled street fighter for some backroad hooliganiry.

I hear ya. Mine may replace my motorcycle - not because I can't ride, but because it would be about the same price, but safer, more flexible, and of similar performance.

I was also thinking the same thing, trade the motorcycle for something like this, too many close calls the past few years riding on the street. Wouldn't be a daily driver, but could be fun to pull up to the grocery store driving a race car, wearing a helmet!
Kach, thanks, I do all the work myself.

That's a pretty radical street car but it sure reminded me of something like top 4th pic from the left. I used to watch these cars at Road Atlanta. At the time, I thought it was pretty much the perfect race car. WEK.

hey speedboy, cool concept. the body looks very realistic in terms of aerodynamics & efficiency. what you should do now is get into some really "evil" graphics - (google gulf, martini, alitalia, budweiser...) i think these cars need some screaming decals since they offer lots of flowing canvas..
good job and nice+original approach!

this is just some examples for inpiration - 7381
since your design is already in 3D it should be possible to map the decal set directly onto the surfaces.

This is the direction I will take my 818 build..... 1400lbs, 300rwhp. Likely will cost a bit more to build, but sure would be fun.

I am hoping that the chassis will be composed enough to allow F5 or others to make different bodies for different purposes...

I like this design a lot for a spec racer.
Here is Speedboy's blueprint side view with the F5 Template.

With a few adjustments here and there, this could work. I would lower the seating compared to the template, you would want to sit low in this car with little as possible of your body being exposed to the air. Either angle the radiator down more or relocate. Not sure on the size of the air intake for the engine deck, maybe smaller in width and height ?
The rear looks good, only thing I would change is the exhaust, that is if that actually is what I am seeing (2 on either side). If it is change that area to round taillights, maybe put the exhaust more in the center.
Other then that, I really like this design a lot for a spec racer.

I think this design might benefit from having the sides next to the cabin brought in a bit...
But even if that modification is not made, this is a very attractive race car, which I might buy.

Yes, that is it! Reminded me of something, couldn't put finger on what. Burgess Merideth as the jet pilot. Such a lame concept. I mean, wouldn't every last drop of that gas have been siphoned out of those abandoned gas stations years before? And even if it wasn't, it wouldn't be stale by then?
And cross country on derilict roads in that car? with no spare tire?
And that gladiator against the Camaro scene, such tripe.
BTW, called The Last Chase (Google reminded me, didn't remember title)
