View Full Version : T56 trans mount to trans stripped threads

Hey, i've just tried to install Energy Suspension trans mount for the T56 magnum and i've stripped one of the threads on the transmission.

I was having a hard time finding the torque value for the bolts used for mounting trans mount to the transmission, so i went with 35nm just to be on the safe side. One bolt tightened fine, the other one stripped the threads on the transmission. Later, after more thorough research i found that the torque value is even higher - it is meant to be 50nm (according to the T56manual)

I am very confused as to what happened and what to do next? Any thoughts/suggestions?

By the way, finding the right bolts for the trans mount was a mission.. Blueprint kept saying they are M10x1.5 (which is partly true, but these are the inner holes which are not used for the Type 65), I used 7/16-14 bolts, but now thinking back, maybe they are not the right bolts and hence why it stripped the threads??

Put a helicoil in and call it a day.

Thanks! It took me 2 weeks to get those 2 damn bolts shipped to me, off i go to find the helicoils and wait for them to ship.. :(

Could someone confirm if 7/16-14 is the right bolt though? I am starting to think that maybe it is not the right pitch, since i used energy suspension trans plate to trans mount bolts and they seemed to fit ( by the way this was official BP advise on how to find the right bolt, since they don't know...). That's how i came up with that bolt size.

When tightening the first bolt even the 36nm seemed sketchy, nevermind the required 50nm. Something is not right here...

Pick up one of these, it will save you a lot of frustration.

I have one of those and would be lost without it. But I have had a number of issues with threads. I overtightened some of the studs coming through the hubs and had to get more studs. I have also over tightened (seems to be a theme) riv-nuts and screwed up the threads but generally a tap has fixed that. I've yet to use helicoils but did watch a YouTube that shows they are stronger. Fully expecting I will be using them at some point!
Good luck nic729 - and thanks for posting this issue as I will pay more attention when I get to that point.

Problem solved - incase somebody else has the same issue, the correct bolt size is 1/2-13. Since neither, Blueprint nor FFR were able to clarify what the correct bolt is for the trans mount, i was told to try different bolts and see which ones fit, i only had 7/16-14 bolts and they seemed to fit - which is what i did. Turns out the 7/16 bolt just created its own thread on the edge of the threads, hence, it looked like it was the correct bolt, but it wasn't and that's why i couldn't torque them to 50nm.. Removed the bolts and the damage was relatively miniscule, so i could just use the 1/2 bolts without issue and get them torqued to spec.

Thanks @jgray for measuring the right bolt!

Glad it worked out!

I had a similar observation for my TKX. The 7/16-14 just seemed loose but then got tight in the middle of my hand torqueing. I'll have a look at the 1/2-13...

I've never seen any of the Tremec's with a 7/16-14 pitch. Most are 1/2-13
