Seems like the default is to go to the Moroso or equivalent expansion tank for a Coyote build. I've dug through the forum and I can't figure out why. Does the FFR supplied expansion tank not work? Is it too small? I figure I'll ask now before I get to that step in the build.

The two that are most popular are the Moroso 63806 tank, and the Mishimoto MMRT-MUS-15E (or -15EBK for the black version). I went w/ the Mishimoto because it has a clear tube where you can see the coolant level for a quick check. I think the main reason people use these is because they are drop-in replacements for the stock Mustang setup, including all the plumbing hoses so there is little risk of anything going wrong. It's a self-burping system. I have seen several builds use the FFR expansion tank successfully (GTBradley's (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?36823-coolant-overflow-install&p=421018&viewfull=1#post421018) build comes to mind) but if I recall you will need to manually burp that setup and use the T-filler neck. I think the volume on the FFR tank is also smaller (but I can't confirm that). I'm sure others with more working knowledge will chime in, but that's just what I remember.

So long story short - yes I think you can use the FFR expansion tank with your Coyote, it may just require a little extra massaging to burp the system properly.

I did not go the Moroso route but did install a larger expansion tank. If you look way down on the front x-brace that is where I mounted mine. The FFR tank is known to be not big enough. The benefit of the expansion tank is that it self bleeds and would make it much easier to fill with coolant. Mine can be challenging to get full but once its full everything works fine.194420

The cooling system in the Mustang, the Coyote comes from, is a closed system. Properly maintained you should not have to add coolant and no coolant should find its way out of the system. Most of us use the Moroso surge tank (or in our case the UPR) because it allows you to set the cooling system up pretty darn close to the way it was intended by Ford. Guys will argue but for my money, I don't like the idea of blocking off coolant passages as Factory Five has you do in the assembly manual.

I used a ubr tank. Similar to moroso but less expensive.

FFR tank is too small.

I started with the FFR system but purchased a larger expansion tank. I liked the Moroso set up but was trying to save some money. I disliked the FFR system from the start. I had trouble getting the air out of the system and could not stop a small leak on one of the hoses. I quickly switched to the Moroso set up and I have not had an issue since. Like Frank said, it is very close to how Ford designed these engines to be cooled. I believe it is money well spent.

Thanks everyone, now I have some stuff to think about while I figure what to do about a cracked master cylinder.

I should add, think about a stock plastic Mustang tank. Wrecking yards a full of them or buy a fresh one from a Ford dealer. Most important feature of all these tanks is the self-burp function. Prevents a dry spot at the top of the cylinder head if you don't get all the air out.

It could be a quick fix you can keep or use till you get an alloy one something else.

IMHO brakes are something you don't want to mess up. If its cracked replace it.

thanks, that's good advice, and yeah, can't keep brake pressure, so that master cylinder is out
