Question regarding toe adjuster misfit to spindle on IRS

Hello all
I’ve definitely gotten my introduction to the realities of problem solving while building a roadster early in the process as I install the IRS. Thank you to all who have been helpful on my many questions.

I’ve got my IRS mocked up and looking good with one exception. It seems the tow adjuster mounts (where it connects to the spindle) are about 1/8-1/4 inch too narrow versus the spindle itself at the point of connection.

I am guessing I need to spread the toe phlanges a bit. Can anybody confirm this approach has worked and if so what tool or approach did you use to spread them? Has anybody else solved the problem a different way?

I’ve searched the forums but have failed to find the thread that nails this.

I have found an old thread with Edwardb from a few years back that (1) recognized the problem as reasonably common and (2) provided solutions.

The solutions ranged from using a crescent wrench to pry open the phallanges on the toe arm to making a makeshift spreader with a bolt and a couple washers and nuts which must be turned simultaneously to create spreading force. I will try this approach and post photos if it proves fruitful.

Almost all of the suspension mounting ears on my frame and suspension arms required adjustment. I used a piece of 3/8" threaded rod, 2 nuts, and heavy washers to either close up or spread the ears. A lot of builders have to do this.
BTW, phalanges are bones of the feet and hands, not car parts.

i just recently went through this myself. i used a Knipex adjustable wrench with no teeth. it was very easy to slightly bend the phalanges slightly. Then when you tighten the bolt it will all be flush again.
