View Full Version : Filler neck impacting pump hanger

I tried searching and am not seeing that anyone has posted on this before.
I have installed the Aeromotive Stealth 18638, which seems to only fit in one specific direction in the stock tank. I got my FoMoCo filler neck seal in today, so I installed the neck and seal, only to learn that the neck hits into the pump/hanger unless I keep it backed out a bit. Seems like this is something that needs to be addressed before future vibrations turn this into a damaged pump.
So, my question is: can I safely trim about 1/2-3/4” off the filler neck part that goes into the tank to prevent any potential damage to the pump?

Simple answer is yes. I have used that pump and don't recall any interference. Will need to pay closer attention on the next build. As long as your use the retainer and the tube cannot be pulled out it will be fine.

You have the fill tube TOO far into the tank if it's hitting the pump.?????

How far is it supposed to be able to push in without making contact? As it sits in this picture, it barely makes contact. If I back it out to the retainer ring, it clears the pump. But, again, my paranoia is that once I start driving, there’s potential for it to work itself in and potentially cause problems with the pump.
With the inlet portion being so long, it would seem I can trim without any issues. 194280

In its final position it should look something like this. It needs to be far enough in so that the retaining ring can be bolted to the flange on the tank, as per the instructions. If it's still making contact with the the pump hanger when retaining ring positioned as needed, then I don't see an issue with trimming off a little bit of the filler tube.

Once installed, it doesn't move around.

I'd cut an inch off that thing in a heartbeat. No way it needs to extend 4.5 inches into the tank. Be sure to smooth over the edges after you cut it so it doesn't damage the seal when you push it through.

I ended up taking off about 1/2”, and filed/sanded the edges to avoid tearing the grommet. Even pushed all the way in, it’s clear of the pump. So, for anyone who encounters this issue, it’s a simple workaround.
