View Full Version : Difficulty assembling toe adjuster arm on IRS: jam nut doesn’t like the tie rod

Hello all and happy new year

I am having all sorts of trouble getting the jam nuts to thread onto the tie rods of my toe adjuster arms for my mkiv IRS. The jam nuts fit onto the adjuster sleeve but not onto the tie rod. I’m guessing many of you have experienced this… the thread doesn’t even get started — I’ve tried flipping them, changing rotational directions etc. the IRS came with 6 nuts, 3 are marked w hash marks and arrows and 3 are not - I presume this gets to left versus right fastener combo to effectuate the adjuster sleeve’s purpose.

But none of this matters if I can’t get it started. Sorry for such a basic question and appreciate your input.

There was a time when the incorrect nut was in the kit. My kit was delivered in June of 2023 and had to source the correct nut. I think the kit came with leftys but needed rightys. If you have a standard nut of the same size (or go to a hardware store and test one out).

Thank you. I believe the included jam nuts are all the same size, but the ones for the tie rods should be slightly larger.

You need right hand thread nuts. Call FFR and get the correct ones.

When I inspect the nuts, two of them are marked differently with arrows and two of them have no markings. I have assumed this was to denote right hand versus left hand etc.

Is it possible that I have been supplied w rights and lefts just that two of them are the wrong size?

I believe the tie rod jam nut needs to be slightly larger than the adjustment sleeve jam nut. Can either of you confirm that?

You should also have jam nuts for the upper control arms. 2@7/8" and 2@1 1/4".Have you mounted them yet and could you have mixed up the nuts? My toe arm inventory sheet lists 4 jam nuts for the toe arms. 2 right hand and 2 left hand but does not list size. The FF part numbers for the left hand toe arm jam nuts is 13166 and 12380 for the right hand.

Just checked my manual. It lists the toe arm jam nuts as 3/4".

Thank you.
I have not installed the uppers yet so I have not cannibalized the correct nuts for another purpose.
The included ones simply don’t fit on the rod ends for the toe adjuster. They do fit on the linkage adjuster however.
It’s even stranger given they are all the intended same size.

They are all the same size. 3/4-16
I'll say it again. Call FFR and get the right handed nuts. This is a known problem.

You can literally lay the nuts on a flat surface side by side and see which way the threads are spinning.

Thank you all, RH threads went right on.
