View Full Version : Did you locate the rear elephant ears in the location specified by the build manual?

Hey Y'All,

I'm trying to plan for the eventual location of the rear wheelwell "elephant ears" because I just don't want to drill and rivet on top of other rivet locations. Here's my dilemma: The factory manual says to mount them on top of the 3/4" vertical tube used for the outside trunk panels, but there are gaps that prevent this from being a solid location. See the arrows in the picture for the gaps:
193920

and here is where it would be mounted (if following the manual). 193921

I know that it is difficult to predict exactly where the best fitment would be until I get the body fitted properly, so here's my question: Did any of you actually locate the "elephant ears" about 3/4" further rearward than the manual says? It seems to me that the location would be sturdier...possibly at the expense of needing to be trimmed to fit the wheelwell. I'm also wanting to get some VRaptorWorks wheelwell liners anyway. Anyone have fitment issues with those? Do they require a properly fitted "elephant ears" or no?

Appreciate the feedback

I would mount them where they fit best with the body in its final position. Don't overthink this. They will be plenty solid for there intended use.

I agree with Mike - mount them wherever suits you best. You won't know that until the body is in its final position. They will be plenty sturdy enough wherever they land.

To your second question, I also installed wheel well liners and I did install the rear elephant ears a bit further rearward than the manual shows in order to leave enough room for the liners to tuck into without being visible. Details in my build thread here (https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/showthread.php?31167-Greek-Guys-Garage-Roadster-Build-9509-(Nice-shoutout-on-Insta-about-my-build)&p=520117&viewfull=1#post520117).

As Mike says, don't overthink the rear elephant ear placement. I used #10-32 riv-nuts to mount mine, and placed the riv-nuts just aft of the vertical 3/4" tubing. Worked fine for me.
