View Full Version : How to finish off the Cubby Hole.

I'm sure many of you have purchased the cubby hole upgrade for your Roadster and then just used the included split rubber trim piece to finish off the hole/opening. I was planning to do the same thing but I really didn't like the looks of the rubber trim piece next to the carpet. That, and if you didn't cut the carpet perfectly the outcome is even worse. So, I decided to make an aluminum trim piece that will go on top of the carpet.
The aluminum only cost me $58 plus 20 minutes of programming time and about the same amount of machine time. What do you think?

I'm removing the material that will form the lip of the face plate.

After machining the relief for the lip I turned the part over to finish the machining. Machined the outside profile, added the mounting holes, faced the part, and then removed the center piece.

After machining the outside profile I took the part home to verify the fit and outside dimensions. I ended up reducing the OD by 1/2".
Here's the finished results.

What have you guys done differently to finish off your opening?
That turned out great. Nice work.

Nicely done. You are very lucky to have access to a mill.
Nice, now you need to make about 100 more so we can all have one!

Thanks guys!
Yes, I'm lucky to work in a small family run business that allows me to use any machine as needed. However, I've seen builders on this forum do a lot more with less equipment.
Time to get back to work,,,,,, installing the carpet is up next.
Here's a short video of the final op.

That looks great!
I didn't buy the cubby kit. I don't think it was available back then. Anyhow, I made my own cubby, and then put a hinged door on it like a glove box, that locks. Took me forever to complete, but that's why it took me sooo long to finish the car.

I'm thinking about adding a door on mine as well but not a 100% sure just yet. A door just get's in the way of reaching for your 45.

I keep my side arm in a holster that is mounted within hands reach. I actually hate that I need to carry but these days ya never know. I like the idea of a door. Your besel with a door and lock would be fantastic. I don’t plan on running a glove box. If you ever consider designing a a besel with a door let me know. I can add my own lock and latch if needed.

Hey Jim,
Nice work! I was thinking of something similar (in more ways than one), but was considering just using hand tools :( A bezel plus special access spring-loaded door would be the ticket!
I'm thinking thru a glove box/cubby like John Ibele has designed, and wondering if a special glovebox plus a cubby is worth the effort though...I'll see how my motivation is...

I was considering making these available to others but the sheer number of different sized cubbyholes that people make would make programming a nightmare. I also think most folks subscribe to the opinion of “built, not bought” so making something yourself is much more satisfying.
I plan on making the same thing for my seatbelt slots behind each seat. I’ve replaced the stock 3” belts with 2” belts so I’ll also make the opening smaller and try to position it directly behind each shoulder. You’ll know what I mean once you install the seats.
