View Full Version : Stop hitting your knockoffs with a hammer!
I just watched a little video on Jay Leno's site. A gentleman has invented a tool that fits over the knockoff's and allows you to use a torque wrench to properly tighten them. The web site is: http://knockoffspinnertool.com
I don't believe that any of our current vendors manufacture this type of product and I have no connection with this company. I am only posting this for those of you that are using pin-drive wheels, in case you have been trying to find a different way to snug them up.
Ray
PS: I am going to contact the Company and invite them to become a supporting vendor.

I seen a tool for this and it was rediculously expensive, like $250 plus or minus. I think it was on the trigo site. Very nice tool however. Its really difficult to hammer the rear wheels because of the deep offset, this tool would really be helpfull.

I talked to the owner, Sarto. He stated that his tool will only work if your hub does not extend more than 5/8" from the outer surface of the spinner to the end of the hub, not counting the dust cap. He is working on a tool that will accommodate a wheel that extends more than 5/8". Mine is 3/4" and will cause his tool to lift off the spinner. His cost is $239.00.
That is expensive!
Yes, it is a bit pricy, but how expensive would it be to repair the fender if (when) you smack it with the hammer. Or, if you don't get the knockoff tight and the wheel comes off on the freeway?
I don't have pin-drive wheels nor any connection with the company, just wouldn't want to see anyone damage their car. This tool does allow you to use a torque wrench to get them fastened down right.

so why is one of their other versions (for lotus) only $139? That would be expensive, but think they would sell a lot more of them.

I carry a lead hammer (which doesn't mar my Trigos when I miss) in the trunk. I safety wire the spinners aircraft-style so If the spinner were to back off I'd notice because the wire would "go slack". I've never had an issue with the spinners backing off.
Seems like an OK idea but the lead hammer is good enough for me.

When I had my MGB, I never had any problems with the knock-offs, even when experiencing flat tires, etc. Always carried the rubber mallet in the trunk, but didn't have the smarts to use the safety wire at the time.
However, I do like the idea of a torque wrench ensuring I have the knock-off properly secured. Pretty cool tool that I think might catch on with the pin drive crowd despite the kind of high price tag!
