Folks,
I have spent the last few days troubleshooting the VSS and getting speedo information to the Dakota Digital Gauges. You can get speedo info to the gauges in one of three ways. (1) Electro-mechanical speedo sensor -- Like MDL; (2) GPS module 50-2; or through the use of VSS. Given that my Tremec TKX came with an electronic speed sensor (VSS) and the Ron Francis harness had the plug, I thought this would be an easy do for me. Oh how wrong I was on this project!!!!!!! First off, I tried plugging the green wire into the DD control box and driving the mile to sync for speed and kept getting a low error. I tried the gray wire and got the same reading. Frustrated after a few days doing this loop in my neighborhood, I took to the internet and forums to see if I could find the answer. There was no definitve answer as to how to fix. I ordered the GPS module, but really did not want to use it as it was a $220 single use item. I set it aside and looked at the mechanical side of the Tremec transmission and remember reading on the boards about an MDL product. I was about to order the product when I ran across a YouTube video that showed low voltage from Tremecs VSS were a culprit in having the speed calibration unusable. Well, I remembered awhile back on troubleshooting some electrical connections on the RF harness connections and decided I would bypass that connection and go straight from the VSS to the DD control box.
Voila, that worked and was able to get the speedometer calibrated and set the mileage to 0. Happy customer. Here is a reminder to everyone that the connectors in the RF harness can be problematic. Always check them and minimize there use and run direct connections when required.
Needless to say that I have been go karting -- no video yet but 5 laps around the neighborhood so far and all system are a go and no leaks. I did tighten the exhaust headers bolts after this last run.
Now to keep plugging away at the little stuff. Video coming soon.
