View Full Version : Cockpit Wall Groove

Here's a new one. I just finished up drilling for my cockpit wall and noticed a groove on the wall on the upper righthand side by the seat belt hole. I saw it before but didn't think much about it. See pic. I'm not sure how it got there from FFR, but the groove is a bit deep but not enough to come out the other side. I do think it has weakened the metal a tiny bit in that area as it's a little flimsy compared to other side.
I've already drilled for the entire wall, so I'm not going to contact FFR to replace it. Should I leave this as is or cut a piece of panel that spans across the back to shore it up a bit?

Covered with a layer of matting and carpet, I can't imagine that ever being noticeable, and I don't see how that area would be structural. Let it ride.

True, I will be slapping some 80mil sound proofing on it.

I may be in the minority, but if you have concerns, have them send you a new panel.
I have insulation and carpet and don't think this would be an issue, but from a principle pov, they need to deliver. I am almost done, so might live with it, but I have put up with POL, poor tolerances etc. If they failed and will not derail your build, make them make.it right.

Had I noticed it before, I would have, but its not a load bearing area and once I shore it up with some insulation and carpeting, none will be the wiser. No way I will hammer through that many drilling points over again. I do wonder how it happened though. Odd place for damage like that. My POL was actually very good. I only had a couple of items that were here in less than 2 weeks. I still don't have my wiring harness though. FFR stated that RF is having issues with labor, so they are producing less. Hopefully it will arrive soon.

Here's a video comparison of one side to the other. I have a spare firewall. I may make something of a support on the back. Won't take long to do.

Looks like it was hit with an angle grinder. I'd agree with some of the above comments that it probably isn't a big deal. It would be a matter of if you can live with it or not.
Me personally, I would see if I could get a replacement cause in the back of my mind, it would just bother me.

that is from the fiberglass body rubbing on the aluminum during transport. Nothing to be worried about.

After finding that my rear lower control arm had only been half welded by FFR, they told me to go get it completely welded. Good luck having them replace a panel for this.

Mike nailed it. Wipe it off and carry on.

It will probably make no difference, but if it bothers you, you can sister on a reinforcement piece on the back side form some scrap aluminum.
