Hood Scoop

For those of you that didn't use rivets on your hood scoop, how did you attach the scoop to your hood? I want a look like this:

That's a Mk1, Mk2, Mk3 hood which had the scoop molded in. Mk4 went to the "original" loose, bolt/rivet on type. If you have the plastic ABS scoop you're asking for trouble if you try to mold it in because of the dissimilar materials. If you have (or can find) one of the early Mk4 fiberglass scoops it can be molded in. I've done it...but it takes a fair amount of work both top and bottom.

Thanks Jeff. I didn't know that those early hoods had the scoop already molded in. I thought the different materials would be a problem, that is why I asked. Guess I will be riveting it.

No rivets (they’ll likely fracture the paint when pulled). Use stainless #8 button heads with nylock nuts like Bear showed.

Some of JK's earlier pics of a blended scoop swayed me (as did his use of Antimatter Blue!). I had my paint guy (Mike Bowen Spotligt Custom Cars) mold it in to the hood. I hate the thought of having lots of holes in the hood after a 4-5 figure $$ paint job. I did the same thing on the trunk lid for a small third stoplight array. The body is at Mikes' so no pics... yet.

Heeding JK's warning of using ABS with fiberglass, I fabbed a fiberglass scoop made of three layers of 10 oz glass with a few final epoxy only skins. The scoop is great, looks great in the hood and has the same dimensions as the ABS but with a bit stiffer flex- not a bad thing. I used the ABS scoop as the mold to lay on 'glass and epoxy. Cover the ABS with plastic food wrap first; no-stick to the epoxy. Come to think of it, epoxy might simply release from ABS; I haven't tried that.

Meanwhile, Can anyone tell me the dimension of the Mk4 oil cooler opening? I plan to add oval driving lights and need to ascertain the opening dimension.

How snug do you tighten? Fairly loose to allow flex, or a little tighter?
