*use . Sorry for multiple post on same issue but I needed to reword my question. Is it necessary to use a drop base air cleaner for a 14" round sitting on top of my Sniper / Victor JR / 427 SBF. I just need to know if it will clear the opening of the hood and not hit the scoop.

For starters, you can try simply resting your hood (without scoop or cutout) on the frame of the car, and checking clearance from the mounting surface of the Sniper to the bottom of the hood. That is still slightly lower than where it will sit with the body in place. I had enough clearance to fit this guy (Billet Specialties 15420 (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/BSP-15420)) on top of my SFB & Sniper without a problem.

I went through about 3 different air cleaners before I got the right combination. I am running a 427 with an air gap intake with a 950 carberator. Very little hood clearance , with some low breather the carberator was being hooked down . I eventually went with a 2" turned down base and an Edelbrock 3" air filter with the full filtered top piece. This flows over a 1000 cfm and the car runs it's __ A off. . I later changed carberator to a 750 to make it more steerable and it ran even better. I was also able to drill the carberator base and add a PVC bung for my crank case evac system.

Running the lowest base you can will allow you to choose the tallest filter for the best air flow. But the base has to clear your other components - carb, distributor, etc. While the filter tops do add a good bit to air flow, they can catch on fire if you ever wind up with a backfire that keeps burning. I'm not saying you can't use them, but in my opinion if you can avoid it that's preferred.

You need a K&N 66-3040, under $175 on Amazon. I've used this on several of my Cobra replicas, including my current ERA 289 FIA without any issues. If the air filter clearance is still a bit too close for your comfort, you can replace the 14X3" air filter with a 14X2.5" to 14X2.75" filter (there are four or five height incremental K&N filters available).
Now, with that said, before you spend any money, you need to see exactly what CFM worth of filter assembly you need to properly feed your engine.
Using the simple formula
A= effective filter area
CID=engine displacement
RPM=maximum RPM expected
Using the CFM formula of height X diameter x 6 x 3.14
Also keep in mind that the 14" extreme top flows 500cfm by itself.
Hope you find this helpful.
Sincerely,
Bill S.

Are you saying that this drop base will work with a Holley Sniper with no clearance issues of the Sniper fuel fittings and all

It should, although I have not tested it myself on a sniper unit. If you buy it from am Amazon seller, most offer a return policy, makes for an easy way to test it, one way or the other, without wasting anything but a little bit of your time.
