I took-up guitar a few months ago and I'm really enjoying it - even more than I originally expected. I've been a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan since the mid-80's, but I've since learned so much about his music and the artists that influenced him that I'm fast becoming quite a blues fan. I started with a Taylor acoustic, but quickly developed a hankering for a Stratocaster after playing a friend's (he has nine of them, actually). Now I'm hooked. I bought a Jimmie Vaughan Tex-Mex Strat the other day off craigslist (super cheap for a hardly played version that still had its pickguard plastic sheeting in place) and I'm waiting for delivery of the '62 re-issue that my wife ordered for me as a Christmas gift. I'm even hoarding parts to build a replica (minus the "relic" look) of SRV's Number One - I currently have a US-made Fender body in three-tone sunburst and a few of the hardware parts with lots more on order, including a custom Warmoth neck.

I guess the car-guy, I gotta build it mentality does cross-over into other hobbies.

Share your stories and photos of your axe(s).

I played drums for years, and about 7 years ago I started playing guitar. Of course I couldn't do just one, and as a hotrodder I couldn't leave them alone.

Blate - I love the picture with the FFR roll hoop sitting among all those guitars!!!

Seems like these hobbies (hotrodding and guitars) go hand-in-hand. There was a commercial recently about American made stuff (not sure what it was for), but it showed a bunch of pictures of various stuff that's truly American and I seem to remember seeing a Strat somewhere in the mix.

Couldn't get it scratched! There are tons of parts hidden throughout the house, and under the beds.

I've been playing acoustic guitars for a while. I currently have a Taylor 814ce, and I absolutely love it. However, about two years ago, I cut the end of my left index finger pretty badly, which resulted in half of the finger tip being lost. After it healed, I've had trouble holding the strings while playing certain chords. I was bummed out for sure. But Recently I went to the Guitar Center in Charlotte and played a Strat. I was amazed at how much easier is was to hold the chords. I've always played Acoustic, so the thought never occurred to me to try a Strat.

But now I'm in the market for one.

Stig - I know what you mean, and I haven't been playing long at all. After learning some basics, I played my friend's Strat and was hooked. I'm still using the Taylor acoustic for most of my playing as I'm working on some acoustic songs right now, but the Strats play so nice. In fact, although I usually don't name things like cars and other objects, I couldn't help myself and started calling the Tex-Mex Strat I just bought "Butter" because that's how it plays compared to what I'm used to.

Cory - Cool flame'd maple top and the SVR signature edition is nice, too. I'm still playing the Taylor a bit, but Stratocasters are my new thing and are taking way too much time away from building my FFR. The '62 reissue that my wife ordered for me arrived a couple of weeks ago and is outstanding. I also finished pulling together the parts for the SRV Number One replica build, so that will be going together sometime soon. Picked-up an American Standard Telecaster the other day, too, in transparent crimson with a rosewood fretboard. Nice thing about guitars is that they are way less expensive (for the most part) than cars, easier to store, and make noises that are just as cool as a V8.

Acoustic for me now, ... I have a 12 string Seagull and a 6 string Takamine.

I LOVE my Seagull 12 string - awesome sound. I also have a 60+ year old Martin 6 string (it belonged to my wife's grandfather) and a 1984 Electra-Westone X185 that I've had since new.

My son has my mother's Yamaha 6 string, but he really really cooks on his Fender American Deluxe Jazz 5 string bass.

Guitars are like crack...you always want just one more. Im at 20 now and look on ebay and craigslist daily.

If you ever come across and 87 or 88 strat plus, buy it...you wont be unhappy. I have 2 87s ( gunmetal blue and yellow) and love the sound of the lace pickups. Heres my blue one.

I currently have a US-made Fender body in three-tone sunburst and a few of the hardware parts with lots more on order, including a custom Warmoth neck.

I used to do all of the repairs for the music store I worked at and made a few Strat and Jazz bass copies for customers. The Warmoth parts are good quality but they stopped giving a discount to dealers so we had to find other sources like WD and Allparts. Fender used to sell a spectacular vintage neck but stopped for some reason. The rumour is that Sadowsky uses Warmoth parts. Anyway, I always enjoyed building the things and making "improvments" like threaded inserts for the neck instead of the wood screws that are usually used and different wiring and pickups. I teach and play music so much I don't have time to do it anymore but I kinda miss it. Fender instruments in general are the perfect Bar Band instruments. You can pour beer on them, drop em, and generally abuse them and they still work great. Easily and cheaply repairable and a great weapon if needed.

I have never owned or played a Strat but I was the production manager of Travis Bean Guitars back in the 70”s and made around 3000 guitars and 1000 basses. I could make them and tune them but couldn’t ever learn how to play them. I still have a collection that have never been played after they left the factory.
