Hi Folks,

Quick question I’m hoping you guys can help me with. I’ve come across two 5-lug axles from a 1991 Lincoln Mark 7 that I’m hoping to swap into my 8.8 Ford rear end (currently 4-lug drum brakes) so I can add rear disc brakes. I have attached a picture of the Lincoln axles.

A few questions:

1. Will the axles work or are they too long?
2. If they’re too long, what can I do to accommodate them?
3. What is the gear-like thing at the wheel end of the axel for? Will that pose a problem?

Thanks for any info.

The gear looking thingy on the axle is for antilock brakes. I’ve changed a few of these to 5 lug axles and the problem is with the extra access hinges le in the axle flange. One of your lugs will end up in that hole or ridiculously close to it, meaning that the hole must be plugged to drill a hole into. Problem with that is the alloy the axles are made from. It gets super hard if you weld on it, thus making the hole difficult to drill. I’d get with Moser engineering and purchase the 5 lug axles. I don’t have a clue on length requirement tho.

I hate spellcheck. I was referring to the access hole in the axle flange.

not 100% sure from the pictures but the area the outer bearing runs on looks damaged. I would get new axles. Depending on what parts you have the axles with the ABS ring are too long.

The only axle from another vehicle that works in the Mustang housing is from a Ranger and because of the offset differential you need two from the same side (don't recall which side).

You can get a set of new 5 lug axles with bearings and seals from LMR for less than $300. They also have the proper offset for 94-04 rear disk brakes.

Hey Guys, thanks for the quick response. Looks like I’m buying news axles.

Richard at North Race Cars, an advertiser on this site, sells the conversion kits including the disc brakes and everything needed at a good price. His website is www.northracecars.com. He knows his stuff.

If you want to get rid of those axles I could use them for rolling a project here around.
Length does not matter for me right now.
Let me know what you think.
