View Full Version : Fast Freddie Electric Steering - Forte Hydroboost help
I completed the install of both systems, added fluid with the pump on and turned wheels side to side and pushed brake pedal several times to get all the air out.
With the fluid now at the correct level and the pump running I have two issues. The pump is very loud and the brake pedal returns excessively slow. There would be no way to pump the brakes.
The pump did quiet a bit as the fluid filled everything but it is louder than an engine running with normal exhaust, much louder than Toyotas (same pump) with electric power steering.
The pump pressure line (-6) runs to the top left inlet of the hydroboost as you face the firewall. The top right side line (-6) of the hydroboost runs to the bottom fitting on the steering rack. The top fitting line (-6) of the steering rack runs to the reservoir and has a tee with a (-6) line to the barb fitting on the right side of the hydroboost.
Anyone have any ideas or solutions.

I have no experience w/ either system but am a line tech for 20 yrs so I will go out on a limb here. I suspect there is still air in the system.Regular PS systems are usually self bleeding since the reservoir is the highest part of the system and it just lets air out while fluid is sucked in. Depending where you installed the pump and reservoir, your system may be more difficult to bleed.
The reservoir is mounted up at hood height the pump is mounted down at the bottom of the front x-member. I have run the system now isolating the power rack with lines connected to both ports and the noise is the same either way. I isolated the hydroboost and connected the lines both ways with the same result. The system is definitely pumping fluid (don't ask how I know).

Just a thought, might be a bad pump. I know that regular power steering pumps get very loud when they are about to let go. Also, is the system powered. I mean is the steering easy to turn which indicates that the pump is working.
Thanks for the input. The pump is definately working. I finally exchanged several e-mails with Fred and we went through a couple of his recommendations only to find out everything is fine and the pump according to him is just loud with the engine off. I am going to try a rubber sound cover and some isolation type mounts. If it is still too loud I may have to look at the mini cooper pump. It is very annoying right now. Sounds like my garage door opener.
I am really not sure what is acceptable noise level to people as I read a lot of posts from people who have the power steering set up before I ordered it and did not seen a comment about sound.

is the brake pedal returning completly? If not the Hydraboost unit might sense it is depressed and trying to apply brakes. I had the lever in the unit miss aligned and pumps goes full pressure and pedal stays down.
Simply fix, split Hydraboost unit and realign lever. Not scary

Md58 I'm also planning on the Fast Freddy unit. Sounds like you used it to supply both the PS & hydroboost for brakes? My research didnt turn up any complaints either so keep us posted on your progress . Why did you mention the mini cooper unit? Have you heard of others using it? Any comparison for size or capacity to supply both the PS and PB?
