View Full Version : E-Brake Mod question

I've done a bit of e-brake mod research. There is a ton of great info on here and it seems most folks tend to go towards EdwardB's mod or the e-Stopp mod with a ton of options in the middle. Unfortunately, I can't read all of it...it turns into analysis paralysis, so I apologize if this is a bit of a re-hash from a thread I missed.

I started Edwardb's mod and ran into the "dragging" cable issue that is discussed in other threads (cable or block rubbing against the e-brake mount). As I pondered which way to lengthen the bar on the e-brake, either add an extension like sunshine garage did or just outright have new longer bars fabricated Carl Williams style, I came up with plan D. The idea is to move the pulley to give a different angle.

If I drop the pulley down to the transmission support bracket, it still stays above the bottom of the 4" bar and allows use of all the original hardware at the handle. Basically, you only need to buy the two pulleys and a bolt. My question is, does anyone see any negatives to this, before I drill it? Yes, I drilled the edwardb way already:(, but I'll just plug it up. The only issue I see is that the trans-support bar is a little smaller, but I will drill in the area that is welded to the extra middle support so I believe I won't have any structural issues.

Yes, the cable does rub across the top of the 4", similar to how it would originally rub across the bottom, but does not touch anything else over there (like that welded mount for the trans-support bar).

Make sure you have enough handle travel to take up the cable for application. I would move the pulley as far aft as possible, without the cable hitting anything, better angle.
The trans brace should be strong enough, no issues there, IMO. Maybe a grade 5 or better bolt.
I did not see the need for 2 pulleys. Both cables fit in the single groove and no excessive wear.

When I ran my e-brake cables, I found out after the fact that they rubbed my drive shaft loop. With that experience, I recommend you test fit your transmission spacer / drive shaft loop assembly and see how the cables run after that. Your spacer doesn't have to be exact; try 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", and 1" variations of plywood.

I used this (https://520speedworks.com/shop/ols/products/e-stopp-electric-emergency-brake) and it was a ton easier than a handle and cables.

My typo, that's what I meant to write when I said e-brake after Edwardb's mod, E-stopp...i'll edit it. Thanks for the input everyone!

I did seriously look at the E-stopp, but then how am I supposed to e-brake slide this little guy?

Agreed, I went grade 8 on the bolt and already have both pulleys, so might as well use'em.

This is what I did to take up slack as needed out of the F5-supplied e-brake cable run. The extension is way too tight in this pic; I had to reduce the down travel for final installation which is good as it provides much adjustment as the cable stretches. There's a jam nut not visible under the frame to keep the pulleys from rotating.

I eliminated the handle and cables by switching to the Wilwood electric parking brake.

I finished up the mod. I used most of the original equipment. I did end up modifying the cable clevis' similar to others by moving the hole and shortening the bracket. I could actually use it as is, but there would be no room for adjustment if the cables stretch a little.

It's fully engaged at about mid way up, and when released the brackets don't touch the trans support bar. :)

One of the better mods, using what is given, I have seen.
Really like the clearance and cable route.
