View Full Version : experienced folks thoughts on low fuel indicator
I did not like the look of my Autometer Ultralight gauges so bought some Autometer Z-series as a replacement. Unfortunately, there is not a direct replacement for the fuel gauge that matches the ohm output of the fuel sender. But Autometer sells a fuel bridge that converts most sender units into a signal that most gauges can accurately use. Additionally, the fuel bridge includes outputs for an led low fuel indicator light. Is this something that you wish you had? My current thought is this is not 'needed' if I routinely monitor the fuel level gauge, but not sure if the usefulness of this modern feature would be more than the detriment of the inclusion of the light on an otherwise classic dashboard.
Thanks

I suspect most people building an FFR vehicle are "car guys (or gals, to be PC)" and monitor their gauges regularly. That being said, the beauty of this build is you can do what you like with it. Your call, amigo.

I'm always a sucker for a good dash LED, but that said, I suspect the actual utility is probably pretty low assuming you monitor your dash with any level of regularity. Not like your fuel level is changing all that fast.
For me, what indicators to include (and where to put them) was more an issue of aesthetics than anything else. It is pretty cramped on the driver side of the dash and things can start to look a bit busy/cluttered if you add too many. I even had to go so far as to reduce my turn signal indicators to a single LED to try to keep things looking clean. If you are going for a more traditional dash, I think it just comes down to if you have a spot for it or not - and if you have any other indicators that may be more helpful (e.g.. water temp warning, oil press warning, etc). I ended up with 5 LEDs total in a traditional looking dash myself (high beam, blinker, oil idiot light, fan override, e-brake) and I was struggling to find spots for everything in the end (you can see how I had to squeeze those last two in the bottom).

In the end, your call though. Nice to have the option.
