Hello All,
Finally made it to the finish line and took the maiden voyage today. It was a beautiful sunny Maine fall day and I had an absolute blast. I started this project in January 2021 with my two teenage boys and it has been such a fun and impactful experience. My oldest son even used it as part of his college essay. I appreciate all the information and guidance that this forum and its members have provided - truly an incredible resource. Below are the details on my build and most importantly, pictures. Still have some punch list items, but good enough to graduate.
Thanks,
James

***EDIT...that's the 25th anniversary dash from FFR. I love it!***
I really like your dash...the lower raised lip on it, and the lower recessed center section, as well. Can you please give me some detail on it? Did you fabricate it, or is that a vendor solution?
Thanks, and beautiful car!

That's the carbon fiber dash that FFR can now supply you. I upgraded mine about 6 months ago and love it.

Is that guardsman or viking blue? Very similar combo to mine. I did a custom engine cover using a cobra oval air filter that would work for u if interested. I went to a Boss302 intake. It’s on my build thread or PM if interested.
Congrats on the build! Get out there and log some miles!

Here's a link for the dash: https://www.factoryfiveparts.com/16989-carbon-fiber-roadster-dash-with-glovebox/ It is really well made and makes the dash very stiff, particularly when you add some support brackets underneath.

It's Viking Blue. As others have remarked in the past, it is quite a dynamic blue depending on lighting and time of day. I will check out your engine cover - that is one of the items on my punch list. Can't wait to log some miles!
Thanks,
James

Beautiful! Congrats on getting her done. Curious on who painted her? As you say, Viking can look different in sun vs shade, angle of shot, etc. It’s a beautiful colour though!

Thanks!
I bonded some right angle brackets to the backside of the dash and attached it to the support hoop on the underside using screws and rivnuts. Theoretically I should be able to remove the dash without taking the body off. I also made 2 aluminum support brackets for the lower edge of the dash. That made the dash rock solid and also allowed me to mount some hidden switches and 12v port.

Thanks Kyle! Your car was the inspiration for us to go with Viking blue. We went round and round with several blues, but always came back to Viking. Jennings Autobody in Fall River, MA painted it, although I had to do a lot of the body work with regards to fitting and fairing doors, trunk, and hood.

Thanks James! What did you use to bond to the carbon fiber and were those right angle brackets aluminum? Any pics? I'll be looking at this in a few months. Thanks again and great job! Really clean build!

I used West Systems epoxy and reinforced it with fiberglass cloth after roughing up the carbon fiber with sandpaper. I would suggest you mount your gauges in the dash before determining where you want to locate your mounting brackets. The locking rings for the gauges take up space beyond the cutouts and you want to avoid having the brackets too close. I used simple steel brackets from the local hardware store (3/4" I think). Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures.

Beautiful build James! you should be proud! I am a viking blue fan as well( painted mine PPG viking blue). And you are correct the lighting really changes the tone of the color. I really like your idea with the l brackets fixed to the back of the dash and rivnuts. In hindsight I should have thought of that. I have flat black screws. that blend with the CF dash that I can access without pulling the body but your solution is much more elegant. Congrats!

Thanks! The radio control works great in that location, never need to take your eyes off the road and easy to adjust. I know that stereo systems stir up some strong opinions, but I love having one and find that the sound is surprisingly good, even with the wind and engine sounds. One thing that I think adds a lot to the sound quality is using component speakers. I was able to mount tweeters high and on the outside of the seats which adds good spatial separation. They are tucked just under the rear cowl lip and are pretty discreet. The 6" drivers are behind the seats since low frequencies are not as directional - again, pretty discreet location. Component speakers do benefit from a good amplifier and I used a 400w Alpine amp which provides a very clean sound. I also have some 4" speakers low down by the front of the doors. Below is a picture that shows the component speakers.

Congrats James! Appreciate seeing your build and all the advice you've given me. It's absolutely beautiful. Now go enjoy the heck out of it before the snow flies! You also made Factory Five's Instagram page. This color is stunning in person, definitely the right choice...seeing this in person seriously makes me question my choice in the coupe...

Congratulations! Your car is beautiful. You are a lucky guy being able to enjoy your build with your kids. As a fellow Mainer, I hope we meet up some day while ripping around our amazing part of the country. I've had mine on the road for about 3 months and just turned 2500 miles-- loving this car more and more with every drive.
Enjoy!!

Very well done, James, and thank you for sharing the build details and the photos. The high quality of the build shows ... and you've moved Viking Blue well up on my list of blues. It just shows the car off so well.
I hope you get in some great drives still this year, I think the fall cruises in this part of the Northland are done. Cheers -- John

Thanks John. If you go the Viking Blue route, you won't be disappointed. Driving in New England is beautiful right now and a couple of 70 degree days make it all the better. That said, snow always seems to be lurking around the corner and who knows how long the season will last. Enjoy the rest of your build!
