I initially assumed they would just slide on without difficulty. Then I realized I may need to gently "convince" them with my soft mallet. Now, I think I broke them as they came apart on both sides and I can't get it off

Put the hammer (soft or not...) for almost everything. Rarely needed. If something doesn't fit, figure it out before hammering on it. Don't forget, as well, that things may need to come back apart in the future for service. Some polishing around the diameter of the spindle shaft with emery cloth and they should slide right on. Those are supposed to be lifetime lubricated so not intended to come apart. I don't know if those can still be used or not. Someone else will need to answer that.

Put some grease on the spindle and work it on by hand after a little emery cloth as Paul mentions above. They’re supposed to be tight fitting and will go back together fine as long as you don’t lose any of the ball bearings.

I had one that would fit either spindle, one that would only fit a specific spindle.
Snug fit, it takes a gentle touch to get them on without binding.

Had the same issue. Like the guys said above- very light emery and clean it well, i used a light machine oil and ended up with success. Like BRRT said above they bind really easy - it's not about the pressure so much as gently pulling at the right angle to get them off, at least thats what I found. That being said I was really glad to get them on and pass that point.
