View Full Version : Broken Thunderbird IRS Outboard Axle Shaft

Dear FFR, I broke an outboard axle stub at the drag strip yesterday :(
I am using the old style IRS that uses Thunderbird parts, not the new Mustang style IRS. I have the kit-supplied axles using 28 spline shafts. Would it be possible to provide part numbers or suggestions to repair the shaft? This is the drivers side, outboard axle stub.
Many thanks,

I don't have p/ns but used to buy rebuild axles from NAPA and use only the pieces needed. Usually the stub axle, internal rollers and boot. Had to press the rollers on/off the stub axle. The actual axle is a special length but the stub axle is the standard T-Bird part. To the best of my knowledge all Ford pieces were 28 splines although there are heavy duty 31 spline pieces available.
I might have a stub axle but won't be able to check until Sunday.

Being that the stub axle is a standard T-bird/Mark VIII, you should be able to take the assembly to pretty much any axle rebuilder and they can repair it.

Part number NCV11998 can be used and you'll take it apart, fit your axle, reassemble.

Thank you for the PN. I think the conclusion so far is that it's not common to buy only the outer stub parts, but the the whole shaft and use the parts you need. Maybe a shaft repair place.

I have my fingers crossed that someone out there has a source for hardened/better parts.

Many thanks for the info!
