View Full Version : The Engine Runs (But I Need Some Help)

Alrighty, I've got the engine up and running - but I've started to confuse myself on the Weber's set-up. If I simply set carbs 2, 3, and 4 to match the flow rate of #1, I thought I was good. However, the next time I started it - Cylinders 1 & 2 were barely firing (from the same carb). Cylinder 1 was so bad, I thought I might have broken something, so I pulled the plugs and coil wire, and did a compression check. All was good with the throttles open (all cylinders from 185-195 on the gauge during cranking).

With the throttles at the idle position, all of bank 0 was low compression with cylinders 1 & 2 even lower (cyls 5-8 were all 170-175, cyls 3&4 at 120, with cyl 1&2 at 95-100 on the gauge).

So, I set the carbs by ensuring that compression for all cylinders was equal during cranking with the throttles at the idle position. This got me back up and running with all cylinders firing. But, when I check the flow with the synchronizer thing, 2 is higher than 1, and 3 & 4 are higher than both from an airflow standpoint.

On top of all this, I keep getting poor fuel pressure. I already decided to scrap the regulator, which seemed to be okay initially - and with it off the Carter rotary vane pump kept me right at 4.5 psi - even without the regulator (up from 4 with it). Now, I'm back down to 2ish psi - without a regulator installed, and am scratching my head. Additionally, my cooling fan keeps turning itself off - and have it wired such that it should just stay on based on the position of the toggle switch. So frustrating.

I decided it was time for a beer, and to celebrate just getting this thing running. I'll head out and tackle all these issues another night. If anyone has any suggestions I'm always open to feedback.

But damn, once these wrinkles are ironed out, this thing is going to rock.

I don't know how to post or imbed videos, so maybe this will work? We'll see. Anyway, I hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend.

From personal experience Webers are not for the feint of heart. I ran them in the 80's and found myself constantly tuning them and chasing my tail. Then I switched over to EFI throttle bodies and never looked back. Jim Inglese now has throttle bodies that look like Webers, you would be light years ahead by switching to these.
