Hi all,

Looking for some examples and dimensional guidance on stripe design.

I realize there is a wide range of options. I’m thinking two wide stripes flanked by two outer small stripes.

Let me know if you have any pictures and dimensional guidance (including suggested tapers)

This is the dimensional sheet I am aware of if it helps.

This is great. I recalled seeing it bot could not find it.

Thanks for providing.

I'm finishing my striping and paint in about a week. This is the template I'm using.

That diagram is for an ERA and doesn't jive with our cars. It won't surround the oil cooler scoop and if you try to hit their landmarks based on measurements at the nose, scoop, front of the hood and cockpit your stripes are going to be all over the place.

Establish the centerline by pulling a string from the center of the license plate lamp all the way to nose through the midpoint between the headlights (it'll be 17 7/8").

By the way, I recommend that you hold off on placing the scoop until after you have established your centerline...because the hood is slightly offset as well as skewed to the left so the center of the hood isn't the center of the car!

That's your reference. The body color stripe through the middle is 1" wide front to back. Here's how I lay them out from there:

Nose

Front of cockpit

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=189261&d=1627675516

Rear of cockpit

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=189262&d=1627675543

Trunk

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=189263&d=1627675574

Do that and it should end up looking something like this:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=189264&d=1685051839

Now, speaking of the trunk---The light pad and handle don’t align. Never have. If you just “connect the dots” center to center you can end up with stripes that lean to one side on the vertical surface of the lid like this:

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=181365&d=1627132917

You can do like my buddy Brother Bat does and fill the handle hole then redrill it so that it’s off center as well but I deal with it by jumping the center so that it runs straight up from the handle as shown here. The outside of the stripes get adjusted slightly so that both the left and right are perfectly vertical.

https://thefactoryfiveforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=181364&d=1678408911

That "jump" ultimately gets hidden by the license plate and lamp and our eye doesn’t realize that the vertical portion of one stripe is approximately 3/16-1/4” wider than the other but everyone except Ray Charles will notice if your stripes look like this from behind //

Hope that helps!

Hi Jeff,

As aways, thanks for the guidance. Indeed, I want to surround the oil cooler scoop so wider it is ...

I see you are a little light on the taper ?

Noted on the misaligned trunk offset in the truck light pad (I and seen you post before on this :)).

Thanks,

M

By what standards? Depends on whether you want to actually see a taper or have the stripes appear straight as they do in the overhead photo I posted. Some that I've seen have a very obvious taper to the stripes. The diagram posted has the stripes starting at 6" at the top of the radiator opening and widening to 7 1/2" at the cowl. That much difference would show as a "V". In the end it's builder's choice on what they want :)

I really like Jeff's layout. RE; taper. Being a bit 'light' does a couple things to my eyes. 1- Let's you surround the oil cooler opening w/o ending up w/ super wide stripes at the back of the hood/ windshield area. 2- The idea behind a taper is to make the stripes appear to not be tapered. But that visual effect depends a lot on how far from the car you are looking at it. Personally I really don't want to see a taper at all so minimum is best for me. A thought for you. I had a friend who had his FFR painted a common blue w/ white stripes layed out like Jeff's first example. But his wife was ex-Navy so the pinstripe outside of the wide stripes he had done in Navy yellow. Kind of a subtle Blue Angels look. It didn't stand out from 20ft away but, knowing the why behind it, I thought it looked fantastic.

Hey Both, all great points.

I agree on the lass tapered option. Appreciate the additional perspective.

I was thinking of adding an accent stripe with a subtle accent color.

I recently painted my car and was going to follow the stripe dimensions on that sheet that was first posted. Jeff K recommended I follow the dimensions he told you. I'm glad I followed Jeff's advice.

I also followed his advice on how to deal with the offset trunk latch. It turned out phenomenally well.

This is the link to my body work thread post where I laid out and painted the stripes. I go over the dimensions I used. It is essentially the same as Jeff's post above, but described a little different.

Here is our finished product with Jeff's dimensions and recommendations.

189392

The sheet with dimensions on the beginning of the thread said to not wrap the stripe fully around the hood opening. We ended up mocking the stripe ending at the flat like it recommended and wrapping it all the way around. We liked the look of it going the film way through, but it was hard to tape.

This is how the jog under the license plate holder that Jeff talked about. In the above pictures you can't tell it is offset.

Thanks for sharing

This is a very helpful add.

This is the direction I’m going (will start to lay them out this week)

BTW, nice job on the paint.

Thanks!!! I'm pleased with the result having never painted a car before. I'm so glad we did it.
