View Full Version : Drive shaft length correct?

I just installed my Gen3 coyote with a tremec TKX and a stock FFR IRS. Today we installed the drive shaft provided by FFR, PN#16038. My concern is whether the driveshaft is the right length? Installation was pretty straightforward and if the spline that goes into the transmission is 6” long, then it has about 2” of length where it engages with the transmission splines. Does this look correct? It just seems like there is a lot of that shiny shaft exposed. And the actual drive shaft seems quite short. Is this correct? Appreciate the opinions of anyone with the same/similar setup.

No, unfortunately that's not right. There should be a lot less of the driveshaft input shaft showing.

Thanks John. I'll be reaching out to FFR today and see what they have to say. I appreciate the input.

Interesting. I just received my MkIV complete kit with IRS, Gen3/TKX setup, and when I selected my driveshaft, I realized later (or so I thought) that I selected the wrong driveshaft. When I went over my kit order about 2 weeks prior to completion with one of FFR's reps, I asked about this, and he said I definitely had the correct driveshaft selected. I still don't think I do, because my driveshaft looks like yours...about an inch and a half of actual driveshaft. I'm curious what you'll hear from FFR about this. I ordered #16038 31 spline IRS 8.38" driveshaft, and my packing list says the same.
I think we need #60175

I’ll let you know what they say. Just sent a note to Dan. Likewise for me. I ordered what I thought was necessary and when I went over my order that drive shaft is what they said would work. Others with Gen3 coyotes, TKX and IRS have about 4” of driveshaft between the U-joint welds. Mine has 1.5” like yours. When I input the part number on FFR parts it comes up with a pic that definitely has a longer Drive shaft, not the short 1.5” min has.

Good deal. I also emailed my sales rep, Jeff, and sent him this thread's URL to review.

That is not correct, don't use that driveshaft. A part# mistake maybe, but not right

Its way to short.

I received a response this morning from Dan at Factory Five:
PN 60175 is a 10.5” driveshaft for a IRS, TKO/TKX, 4.6 or 5.0 Coyote based combination. PN 16038 is the same shaft, except being shorter for a 302/351W application. So, yes it sounds like you will need to swap your driveshaft.

I got a similar response from Dan today. His question was whether or not PN 16038 was what I ordered or what I received. I explained similarly to what you did that the FFR rep confirmed 16038 was the right part when they did their pre-ship review with me. No response on how they plan to swap the parts…

Yep ,after Dan told me I did have the incorrect driveshaft, I had to email back and say 'what are you going to do about it?'. A few hours later, Dave Vivieros sent me an RMA number and a FedEx return label is on it's way. Also sending me the correct driveshaft. On the RMA sheet, the 'Reason' column says 'changed mind'....as if I was to blame. LOL. Oh well, at least it's getting rectified.

And on a side note, Factory Five should consider adding logic into their online build form...since we both selected multiple Coyote options and IRS options, the driveshaft selection should probably default to the correct part number, and if we chose to override that and select something else, a dialog box should pop up and say 'hey...not so fast...'.
Or, something in their order system should have simple logic that 'if Coyote motor mounts and IRS are selected, 60175 driveshaft should be selected', and alert them if it's not. Easy fix.

This is the reason why I worked with one of the reps to order my kit and did not use the online order system. I was so afraid of accidently messing something up.

To be fair, we all worked with a rep on our order...two weeks before final production. In my case, and in Bryan's case, the rep failed to identify an issue, even when we both brought it to their attention. If we had both taken your route and skipped the online order and just used Dan, we may be in the same situation we're in now. Not that it's a big problem, and FFR will make it right, but it's just so avoidable with some simple coding on their website.

I agree, I’d hoped that logic had been built into the ordering system or that the FFR rep that I discussed my build with would have caught it. I just hope they can learn from this as none of us are perfect and mistakes help us get better. No word yet from FFR on whether they will swap mine out, but it’s only been one day. Glad to hear yours is being rectified!

Reads like a cover-up to hide someone's mistake from the boss.

If anyone knows the right person at FFR to send this thread to, it might be good for them to read through it, as a process improvement opportunity.

You would think that a manufacture of parts company that is heavily invested in R and D would have a rock solid website listing ALL the parts that goes into the cars so their customers can identify, buy, have the logic to ensure that the part is correct for you car Like Auto Zone, Napa, Advance auto, shows you inventory even if it is ZERO. The parts website is the first place where customers go for information about specific parts for the cars. In the last year the parts web site list hardly any parts for the cars.

I just got an email from Dan/Dave with the RMA and a note saying I will get a FedEx label via email soon to return the wrong shaft. Once they receive it they said the’ll ship the right one. Of note in my RMA is says “shipped wrong parts”. Glad FFR is doing the right thing. I also hope they learn from this!

I still haven't received my RMA return label from FedEx, and they didn't tell me they wouldn't send the part they should've sent in the first place until they receive my return. It doesn't bother me, because I'm way early in my build. But, if I was stuck at a point where I couldn't move forward without a driveshaft, I'd be a bit perturbed. I emailed Dan today to get the status on the FedEx return label, but haven't heard anything.
