Is gravel required or strongly recommended for nicop brake lines

The nickel copper alloy brake line is not as soft as you might think. Softer than steel or SS yes, but rugged stuff. IMO, the most important factor is the use of quality line. I have used NiCu line from Fedhill USA on both of my builds.
