View Full Version : Clutch selection. sorry so many ?

I have my own ideas on things but , because so many people here have first hand experience of what works or doesn't work in these unique cars . I like to throw out my ideas and see if it isn't a good idea or thought and see what better choices are out there.

I have ordered my Smeding Performance 427 560hp/560tq motor (6-8 week arrival :o ) I already have the Tremec TKX with the .68 overdrive. I am now narrowing down choices for the clutch and as you might have seen in other post I am going with the Tilton hydraulic throwout bearing. I am considering the Mcleod RST street twin https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mcl-6913-07c/make/ford All ideas are greatly appreciated. As my build thread title says , I am living the dream. cheers.

You definitely need one that will handle your horsepower but its also a light car and how your going to drive it all come into play. Forte knows all.

Be careful when checking clutches that the big engine doesn't have people recommending a race clutch. A friend did that and ended up w/ a clutch that worked like an on/off switch. I don't remember which brand it was but he called their tech people who recommended a disc w/ different compound linings.

I really like the Centerforce Dual Friction clutch for the street. Reasonable pedal pressure, excellent holding power, and very easy to modulate.

If you're racing, then I like the Spec clutches.

I'm running a Ram 88794HDT (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ram-88794hdt) and seems to be okay.

Daily street driving occasional AutoX, Drag Strip & Charity Runs at VIR. CenterForce 11" DF148500 Dual Friction clutch disc & pressure plate set + Centerforce Flywheel. Holds Up To 687 ft/lbs of Torque. CenterForce steel flywheel.

Good holding power moderate pedal pressure.

I would look at Ford Performance parts. I think it would be less likely to chatter. I have the blue Center Force on my Coyote and have to keep rpm up and slip the clutch to prevent chatter from a stand still. Very irritating to me.

I liked the McLeod RST dual disk. Light throw with a hydraulic system, hooked well.
I ran a variety of other clutches, most worked well. The Centerforce dual friction was a nice piece. HP/Tqe ratings should be considered but in many cases the tires will let loose way before the clutch. Now if you're a consistent drag racer with hard launches that needs to be taken into consideration.

Mostly street driving, but not turning down an opportunity to put it on a track casually

Really enjoying all the responses here. It's like having someone testing all the different products for you . Then just look at the spreadsheet and choose.

You don't need to go for a radical clutch for a street car because these cars are so darn light.
Just find something that is rated for the output (HP & Torque) of your engine.
Your tires will be spinning unless you intend to run slicks to do wheelies.
Multi disk clutch or super stiff springs are not needed for a street car.

In this case it sounds like there is no point in getting aggressive, an easy single disk clutch rated for the power and a nice heavy flywheel is perfect for full street with occasional casual track driving. You CAN get away with a much more aggressive clutch than normal in these because they are so light but if the use is just going to be almost all street theres no point to spend more money getting a really light aggressive setup that wont be used as intended.

a nice heavy flywheel

I did a lot of research and with Mike Forte I went with a 22 lb flywheel. Not too heavy, not too light. You always have to remember the weight of the car, in this case it's not very much!

Yeah definitely. My whole setup including the twin disc clutch and flywheel is 30 lbs, I think you could get away with a sub 20 lb complete setup on these without any issue but it would be less enjoyable on the street as a 20+ lb flywheel

I know they are putting a billet steel flywheel on , not sure of the weight.

My CenterForce Billet Steel Flywheel weighs 21.65 lbs according to their specs. Works well with the sub 2400lb car.
